1977 Exciter project

I am in the process of going thru my exciter for vintage drag racing and wanted info on a few mods. Now I have read and spent some time on the boards here, contrary to this being my first post. Just have not seen any of my questions come up.

My buddies that I am working on this with are welder/fabricators by trade. I have been looking for an aaen single pipe for this sled and have not had any luck finding one used. I have seen some on ebay for the later models. How close are the 2nd gen pipe layouts to the my sled?

My hope for this sled is to drag race it in the vintage 440 class and wanted a good starter point for clutching and gearing. Keep in mind the engine will be untouched other then ditching the stock pipe. Any tips ???

Cant help much on your question but look forward to updates. I have a '79 that I will be completely going through including the motor. It will have a Phazer top end. Hoping to possibly modify some srx twin pipes for it. I will be running dual 38mm carbs on it.
 
These sleds are competitive in their class and it should work well for you. If you have welder buddies, Aaen will sell you a pipe in pieces so that you weld it together yourself. Your buddies better be GOOD because this stuff is thin!

Pay attention to the details, don't overlook anything and you'll do well. The guys that I knew back in the day that were always in the winners circle were consistent, that's the first thing. But all of them had basically picked apart and blueprinted their machines and didn't cut any corners. I know that the same holds true today.

I would highly recommend the Aaen pipe and not fooling around with mismatched equipment. You haven't said what you mean by "later models", but you should know that the SS 440 was a completely different animal.

Thanks for the tips, before I put them thru welding up a kit , I will try to get one used. I hate to put them out for much unless I am in a pinch. These guys make all their own pipes for their own personal stuff and have lots and lots of time into each one they do. I wish I had the skills they do but I am more or less a guy on the sidelines hoping to have fun with them in this class.

My sled has what I belive to be a gray spring on the primary , is this stock? I am hoping to get the engagment up to 4k or so..... any tips??
 
a clutch off a 340 exciter or enticer will engage at 3500, i run a 340 enticer clutch on my 1980 exciter and it hits much harder off the line. I have not been able to find clutch tuning parts for these old yamaha clutches, seems like most guys switch to comet.
 
Dual carbs

How do you plan on mounting the dual carbs? I have a '76 & '77 exciter and the thought of dual carbs has crossed my mind.
 
there's a guy that goes by AHOOD on this forum and Vintagesleds.com, he makes them and can set you up.
