How hot should the primary clutch be on a SXR 600. We were riding yesterday in snow that was like sugar. About 12" deep and all cross country riding and ditch banging 55 miles in total.. The wife said that she could smell something but I could't ( my sniffer is not the greatest) I checked the clutch and the primary was really hot not burning hot but good and hot. If there was some snow getting through the vents and hitting the belts would minor slipping heat them up like that. That is what I am thinking was happening but she probably didn't notice.
I always give her crap about easing into the throttle to lightly. I tell her to hit the flipper and get it moving and then back off a little. I know the first time she gets stuck , she is going to smoke a belt right away. She still thinks that if she hits it like that the sled is going to take off like a rocket ship out from under her. I keep saying it is only a 600cc not 600 HP. I know in the back of my mind that she is thinking that if I hit the FLIPPER I could probably drive right over him before he gets a chance to move. I always keep one eye on her just in case.

If clutches are working efficiently they should be just warm, not hot, hot
means your getting slippage, waisting HP(not set up right, wore out parts,etc...)when was the last time you serviced clutches??

Checked the clutches over at the start of the season. Everything looks good, blew all the beltdust out and cleaned with break clean. Scuffed up the belt surface a little. I will check them over again and also check them when we ride the trail this weekend. Might have been to much snow coming through the vents.
Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but you should never never use any kind of cleaner for the clutches....Just warm mild soapy water and a brillo pad to scuff it will do the job......That worked for me for the last couple of year...I'm sure your belt is slipping from the oily cleaner residue....Take them out and clean them with warm soapy water and do the same with the belt....dry them good and try it again....Either you canspin dry them in the machine or just use the wife hairblower......

brake cleaner is ok, as it does not leave any residue, which is why you can use it to clean your brake pads also.Nicko said:Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but you should never never use any kind of cleaner for the clutches....Just warm mild soapy water and a brillo pad to scuff it will do the job......That worked for me for the last couple of year...I'm sure your belt is slipping from the oily cleaner residue....Take them out and clean them with warm soapy water and do the same with the belt....dry them good and try it again....Either you canspin dry them in the machine or just use the wife hairblower......

I use Brake cleaner, and have no issue's.
nitris223 when I ride in some deeper powder I find that my clutches also get hotter than trail riding. On the trail they never get that hot, I can touch them with my hand without prob, but in deep powder, they can get hot, where I can't touch for more than a second or so. what I will do is stop every once and awhile and let it cool down. Could be the snow coming in, or could just be the extra load that is put on the clutches from running in powder.

That's what I was thinking about the snow plus the wife is not one to be hard on the throttle so she lets the front dive to much. I have to get some aftermarket transfer rods and wider ski's to help her out a little better.
Brake clean will wash out any grease and leave no residue. I use it like water all the time. I need to get a tanker unit of this stuff. I have already bought 7 cases so far this winter.
Cleans off grease from the engine bay and drys in seconds. Kleen Flo is the best so far, I bought some of Walmart's tech 2000 brand and I think that is paint remover in a can. Didn't cut the grease but took the paint off my sled lift. I don't use that crap anymore. I knew the price was to good to be true.

Sled should be 8500 rpm at wide open throttle. check the outer shive temp. The inner is allways way hotter & not a true indicater.

I was touching the sheave closest to the outside. Forgot all about the rpm . I was thinking more about the suspension handling and ski lift, transfer etc. Putting new shocks on this week and going oout again this weekend on the trail. I will trade with the wife for a while to put it through it's paces, check the engagement , shift out and top rpm. 8500 max right
Turk what would a 51/43 helix be like on a SXR stretched to a 144. Basically a 600 mountain max. from the little riding I did do on the sled it feels like it has to spool up to about 40 mph and then it kicks in and goes good. There is no real bottom end grunt is what it feels like. I know when I crack my Polaris twin it feels like it wants to jump ahead like a drag car. The SXR is like a Deisel truck is the best way I can describe it.

You won,t much gain from a helix change if rpm,s are 8500 right now.
