Local help w/SXR

I like to wrench on basic stuff I know about, but not well versed in sleds. Lookin' for someone local to Sterling Hts Mi area willing to spend an afternoon or so helping me tune/maintain/mod the sxr700. Basic needs are removing one gasket layer, reed notch, pull the carbs/clean/I have new jets/adj clips. Gonna do the can thing too, after I see how these work out. I've heard the carbs are a trick, not for the meek/inexperienced, so thought I'd see who's around here and well-versed in yammie triples. Thanks.
 
I know you got yours and had it all done immediately. I'm more turnkey really. After two years of running, time to update it. Any tips/tricks/caveats you came across while doing those mods? You can PM info if you want/would.
 
Just follow the tech pages on the head gasket and the reed notch, they are pretty forward. I bought the silencer bored out from a TY member, so you might want to se if you can find one so you dont have to mess with yours and you can always put it back to stock if you dont like it. I MAYBE selling mine if I get these pipes from one of my co-workers friends so I will let you know.

Clutching this sled goes a long way! Try to find yourself a 51/43 heix out of a stock RX-1 and do a search on what rivets to use I cannot remember off the top of my head.

You should also try to find yourself a set of adjustable transfer rods, they are amazing, any brand would be fine.

My dad has a MBRP race can. He loves the sound and it really woke his sled up but it is really loud and kind of anoying on long rides if your interested make an offer. He might be willing to part with it for the rite price.
 
I did the 51/43 last year, just had my clutches match/machined for o/d. The 1.25 ripsaw made a HUGE difference, as did clutching. Took my 660' from 60mph to 80mph. Hoping these adjustments will get me to high 80s or so. Thanks for info. With gasket deal, just unbolt, remove, replace? Any sealants, etc??
 
Boy do I wish I knew how to work on clutches, suspensions and such! Does anyone know anyone within say a 30 mile radius of Appleton, WI to work on my 2000 SX700R? I would love to learn some of this stuff.

What would be a good price for a used 51/43 helix?

Whitewater is quite a ways away and SE Michigan is way to far for T.S.U.Filmz. :)

There was a helix in eBay that went for around $55 shipped, but I missed the end of the auction. If you ever get in the Appleton or Mountain area, give me a holler in advance. The sleds are in my garage in Mountain and right next to the snowmobile trail.

Finally got around to the carbs... went pretty smooth I think. NONE of the pilots were clear! But they are now. Fuel screws were about 1 3/4 out. Pilots are 45, changed mains to 142.5 across. Needles were a PITA! Removing that #10 was a mf'er... any tricks to it? To drop the needle, you dont have to remove the clip, just slide a washer off the bottom and put it on top, correct? Was pretty goopy in there too (grease?). Used carb cleaner on just about everything as a washdown.

BTW, just what gaskets need sealant? Exhaust Y? Head? Reed blocks? Any carb covers? Seem some do, some don't.

I am going to get new carb bolts SHCS since 3 needed easy out help. Going to do the reed notch today. Thinking about the silencer, unsure with MI cracking down. Is it okay?? As a sidenote, those hose plugs sold here work GREAT!!

Thanks to all on here with step by steps and pics... I put them in a Word doc and printed... couldn't have a better guide!!

Now, just hope I did it all right and she runs good! :rofl:

I punched her down this weekend and see that the revs are 9000+. No wonder I don't have the top end. Definitely needs some tweaking.

Oodles of beer, you name the pizza, and local TV. Local tavern .5 miles away too. ;):D

PM me if you will be in the Chute Pond area any time this Winter. You can drop the sleds at my place and flop if need be.

What type of parts should I be looking for in advance....some sort of kit of springs and helix? I would presume stock carbs and stock exhaust for sure.

Stock spring, and a 51/43 RX-1 Helix, once you get that let me know, I have to think what the twist rate is.....

Have had mine at 100 on the lake, but last radar rund I couldnt get over 83 but the conditions sucked....
