high oil consumption on '00 vmax 700

When the oil pump goes bad it pumps the maximum amount it can all the time. My friends did this and he was using so much oil it was unreal. We put a new pump in it and it barely uses any now, well compared to what it was I mean.

Like Yama49601 said either pump went bad(WOT) OR your cable came out
of it's seated position, check where it pulls apart and see.

is the pump arm returning all the way?

when i check the freeplay on the pump cable, it appears to have the proper ammount of freeplay. i guess i need to get to the pump itself to check it out firther, but how? do the carbs need to come off and how is that accomplished. and what do i do with the pump once i can get to it?

more questions than answers....

Oil

Make sure the cable is not pulled from the seat right over the carbs. There is a spot there where two cables come together and I have found this often on the triples. Daman explained it in an earlier post.

Remove all but 1 or 2mm of free play from your throttle cable. I was burning an obscene amount of oil last year in my 2000 SXR 700 and that was the cause. Found my 98 700 V-max to be the same way this year!

wow...all but 2-3 mm of freeplay? the stock spec is around 22-23. if i remove that much, will it starve the engine for oil? it looks like in order to get to the oil pump, i'd have to remove the carb rack. anybody have directions on that job? i've actually been thinking about removing the pump and going pre-mix with this sled. i did that on my '99 ls2000 boat because of the rash of oil injection failures on that (65u) motor and i haven't regretted it. any thoughts on that route?

Lol she'd be using a hell of allot of oil 2mm..lol, yamaha pumps are pretty
reliable i would not remove it,plus pre-mixing on the trial would suck.

Do these checks in this order;

1st- set idle to 16- 1,7000 rpm's(@ operating temp)

2nd- set throttle end play to 2mm(adjustment for that is down at the carb rack)

3rd- set oil pump cable free play here and here to 19(richer)to 21(leaner)mm
