so, I have a 97 venture 600 as my avatar shows,

I am having the studded track installed tonight, and my mechanic cannot figure the front excahnger guards out.

here are the ones I got, and he says they will not fit.

I would normally do this myself, but time is the issue.

I almost got the Hauck ones, but they could not produce them quickly enough, even given 3 weeks time frame :(

from what I see, these are the same style? correct?

yes, my mech works at night.

these should fit right???

of course, no instructions came with the protecetors.

I think we have until tomorrow evening to get this figured out, at worst case.
 
The only one I found in JR grahms catalog are rear protectors not front. So no they won't work
 
hmm,

the link does not pull up, but if you go to Jr grahams site, and type in "MA1201" in the search, it goes right to them.

fwiw, the jr graham ones look just like yamaha's SMA-8CR32-12-01 guards. these have the "stud" on top.

the stud goes up correct? I wish JR graham had included instructions.

apaprently my mechanic has not worked on many proaction yamahas.....

I am sure someone has installed exchanger protectors like these, they look just like the yamaha ones.
 
Yes , those are the fronts. If you have a skidplate, you will have to slide the bottom mount between the skidplate and the alluminum bellypan. I drilled 3/4" holes in my skid plate to access the rivet holes in the bottom of the protector(this is only, if you have a add-on plastic skid plate)

I have no skidplate, so the bottom is the flat part, that extends onto the aluminum, and where does the stud go? is there an existing hole, or do you need to drill a hole for each?

If I was working on this, I am sure I would be able to figure it out, but the mechanic is usually quite good, he used to be a race mechanic for yamaha at eagle river and such back in the 70's. This is the only time I have ever had him not be able to figure something out.
 
I believe you have to drill the hole, but you better wait untill someone that has installed that type chimes in. I think the purpose of that style was to make install a little easier. You should be able to drill the hole without removing the front drivers, just be sure that the area on the otherside is clear before you drill( fuel lines, wires , etc)

that makes sense.

since the track and driveshaft are out, it should not matter.

But I will wait to hear from someone that has installed these.
 
I have them. You have to drill a hole. They kind of suck. One the rivets on the bottom eventually loosen up and then they fall out. So I had them welded in. They still fell out. Net I'm going to tap the stud and put a screw in from the top and then rivet them again. Right now one is on my sled and the other in my tool box.
 
ok, I have it figured out.....

the Mountain max and the Venture share the same tunnel/ bulkhead.

it is a little different than the SX bulkhead/ tunnel. there is no where for the top stud to mount to on the MM / venture. these sleds require a different heat exchanger protector than the rest of the sleds. So the ones Hauck sells/ and everyone but yamaha sells are not for the MM/ venture, but for all the rest of the sleds on the proaction chassis. Must have something to do with the extra tunnel clearance for the MM. Since nobody studs a Mountain Max, the only sled affected would be the Venture.

we checked with our local Yami shop, and they have the correct ones coming in tomorrow. thats good, because the parents are leaving Thursday morning for a week at the cottage, with the venture. the mechanic will do the work tomorrow night.

hmm, well, even the yamaha dealer messed up (not port yamaha) and ordered the wrong protectors. they sent the yamaha ones that havbe the bracket on top, and require more pop rivets.

Only there is nowhere to pop the rivets to. They have sent new , hopefully correct protectors today, but due to the dealers serious mess up, my parents had to leave the Venture behind, since it was not completed.

sucky for them, since they were really looking forward to riding a twoup finally. That was the whole purpose of buying the venture this fall. With Mom being a busy realtor, she cannot get away many weekends. If she goes up north twice a winter to snowmobile, she is lucky.

yeah, the dealer sold the hopefully correct ones to us for under 18 dollars, but that does not alleviate the lack of a 2 up this week.

They do have the 3 other sleds to ride, but I don't like my dad riding MY XC since he has crashed once before. Yeah, I don't let him live that down. Granted, with mom on a separate sled, they will end up putzing anyway.

Oh well, it may be next weekend that the venture really gets some use, iif my Gf and I go up superbowl weekend. That is unlikely, but we are definitely headed up for Feb8th weekend.

what really bothers me is that all the makers of these protectors specifically say all proaction chassis sleds, even MM models use the same front heat X guards. this is obviously NOT true.
 
This does not make any sense. The vmax and the venture use the same bulk head. Exact part numbers in 98. 8CR-21940-07-00 .. I think that the installer may not know what they are doing.
 
I know, it makes no sense to me either.

the guy doing the work is usually extremely good, quick, efficient and cheap. but this time.. what a PITA
 
I got the same protectors in the pic. I have a 04 Venom. It look'd to me if you were to drill for the bottom holes between the bulk head and the front heat ex you will be drilling into the heat exchanger. I did'nt install them as they also did not line up with the track holes either. Mayby they would work on the older SX's don't know for sure. Might be able to mod and tack them on. Anyway the front ex with 1" track and woody's 1175 studs don't hit the font ex anyway but will hit the rear ex and the front of the tunnel will catch some light scratching. I have the rear protectors on it.

yeah, that does help.

it seems nobody has installed front protectors on a venom or a venture in the sx chassis

I will call Hauck and see what they say.

the yami dealer that apparently had the right ones on order found out that yami did not make that part anymore. so, it looks like we may be SOL, unless we fab something up to make the "wrong ones" work.

Hi, I called the dealer I got my Venture from. It already had studs installed and used by previous owner. The dealer said it is not necessary it would only protect the cooler if the track got really loose. That would be way way out of spec. I looked at the front cooler and there wasn't a mark on it . I won't bother with them. Unless you're driving real wild I don't see why you would need them or if a main suspension component broke letting the belt go wild.
