02 600sxr with Loose Pistons

I have an '02 600 Sxr that has considerable piston noise. Had dealer listen to it and was told it was "piston slap". I tend to agree with him. Has anyone had any luck with aftermarket pistons? The sled has low milage but has seen some considerable cross country racing. I'm kind of a cheap SOB and the $100+ for each piston set plus gaskets is hard to swallow.
 
I've been told many times that OEM's are best in a stock yamaha. I just went through a rebuild and used OEM. Cost hurt, but it'll pay off in the end. If you use the search option, you should be able to find some info.
 
Open it up and check your clearances,maybe someone had there hands in it
and bored it(wrong),stock these sled's didn't have piston slap,need to find out if things are original in there.

how many miles??
 
Bought it new

dealer didn't even fully assemble it. I did some revamping for racing, raced it two years. Now that it's just trail ridden I've noticed a "rattle" in the engine. Very noticable at idle. Dosn't sound like a rod, very much top end. I don't ride it much because of this problem. I know that I'm going to have to tear it down to find the source. I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck with non-yamaha pistons.

I wouldn't use anything but factory parts in that sled, why don't you take the jugs off and measure them, also, double check the price on those pistons....................they list for like $32 ea, the rings are more than the pistons.

USE YAMAHA PISTONS . Quality aftermarkets cost the same . Real cheap aftermarkets are garbage . South seattle sports plaza yamaha is the cheapest yamaha parts i found on yhe web .

Dunno why venom ppistons are cheap,there about the only one's i think
SRX are close to $100, my XTC and VMDLX are $60,etc...
 
yep thats why I said that, those are the cheapest Yammie pistons ever, a 600 triple is $32 and the 700 is like $90, go figure.
 
Well maybe I'll have to tear her down after I get my SRX back together. I went to the dealer that I bought the sled from. Great people they rebuilt my 80 SRX motor. I think the quote that I got for pistons, rings, gaskets was just over $400, (from the unfriendly parts lady).
 
$400 for a complete rebuild is cheap using your labor. Right now I've got $500+ into a 600 twin that I had to do a cylinder swap and now have to send the other out for re-plate.
 
I don't mean to sound like a cheap SOB. It's just that I've got over $1200 in a '80 SRX project and I haven't even put it together yet. I'm sure that price tag will go up. So I'm just weighing my options.
