we just picked up a used 98 srx for dirt cheap because the previous owner could not find the problem. I started it, it idles fine, let it run for an hour no problems, took it out for a small ride, as soon as you pin it it fouls 2 plugs. runs like shit at idle (no wonder lol) change the 2 plugs let idle perfect, pin it again, same problem? any suggestions, wire harness seems to be in good shape too.

stock 98 jets, yes the boots ohms good. My buddy has it at his house, now he just told me that it has 9es plugs in it, not the ecs, i wonder if that could be the culprit.... gonna lend him some good plugs tomorow so he can try it out., Also he tried the sled, with the rear lifted, it goes great, he tried it in front of his house, great again as theres no traction track spins, went for another small ride int he snow, 50feet, same 2 plugs fouled again, so the load has something to do with it.

When's the last time the carbs were cleaned?
MrViper is going to want to know loaded, checking it with the track off the ground doesn't provide a true measure.

ya, riding it down the field, what rpm does it pull?
I had a '98 that would drop cylinders randomly under load and eat plugs. After fighting through all of the jetting, and replacing the coils, wires and the stator and verifying the wiring harness, it turned out to be the CDI box. Apparently there wasn't enough voltage signal to light off all three cylinders. Might be something to try if you have access to another CDI box.
Don, you helped me out with this one a couple of years ago, remember???

Is there a way to test this other than swapping CDI's, my 98 SRX6 has been doing the same thing for years. It helps to let it idle for a long time when starting it cold without touching the flipper! But deffinitely still a major problem.Theicor said:I had a '98 that would drop cylinders randomly under load and eat plugs. Finally bought a sparkplug cleaner to help with the cost of the plugs. Ive gone through close to 100 new plugs, then started cleaning and re-using them.
It doesnt sound like the same problem turbor is having though, same two plugs, well after it is warmed up!

Theicor: I think I vaguely remember it, been a long time and many sleds ago....LOL! How have ya been? hope all is well!
Sno-XR:is it just fouling plugs on start up or? maybe better describe your problem, might be able to help.

Sorry, dont meen to Hi-Jack this thread!!
Yes, mine is just at cold start up(over night) and is random on which plug goes first. Sometimes I will go through all three before it warms up. I can put 3 new plugs in before I try and start it, and it will still foul 1 or 2 .
This started literally overnight. Never had a problem with starting or going through plugs untill I put it up for sale and bam!! Sled was only about 3 years old at the time.

Hey Don, things are going good, I did end up parting out my old mod this summer, and I picked up an Apex Mountain last spring and so far enjoying it, but there are always mods to be made...
Here is a link to the issues I had with mine, it may not be the same issue but there are some things to look into when troubleshooting...
http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9955
The cold startup issues sound like jetting is fat on the bottom end, fuel screws adjusted correctly and not leaking? Pilots correct? And remember, do not touch the flipper until the sled is warm, and once she is running after initial startup you shouldn't have to run with the choke on for very long. You can hear the engine change when it doesn't want any choke if it is adjusted correctly, at least this has been my experience. I run 9ECS plugs on my short track '98 SRX and replace plugs only once a year at the beginning of the season.

well i didnt have the time before to play witht that sled, its now here in my garage, its weird sometimes, you can pin it under load it will be ok, but its fouling plus randomly when you let it idle too long and oil is almost dripping out of the pipes. everything was changed on this sled, wire harness, cdi, stator, coils, plug boots, im just about to take the motor apart and change the crank, been told it might be twisted. cant think of anything else?

I had the same problem...stupid problem too...
The oil cable coming off of the throttle cable had been pulled tight (separated at the adjustment gap) and was dumping WAAAY too much oil into the cylinders.
It idled fine, but at 1/2 throttle it fouled the plugs.
Check yours!

You may want to check your pump then......turbor said:when you let it idle too long and oil is almost dripping out of the pipes.
