Well I searched as long as I could hoping to find the answers to my sled's problems

I recently purchased a 2001 SRX 700 with 2800 miles on it, I have taken it on 2 - 150 mile rides with -0- problems or issues all seemed fine

yesterday on the return of a 100 miler I noticed my tach and fuel gauge stopped working
I shut her down and fired it back up , still out , but she runs fine
being daylight I had not noticed the headlights were also out, hi and low beams as well as my tail and brake light , I'll assume the hand and thumb are out too as I was pretty warm already had them off

I do have an electric face shield and it was connected ( yesterday only , not on the other rides) I'll assume it was dealer installed , tapped off the black and blue near the guages

I did read here several times about the harness under the engine, so
I pulled the pipes and cut the harness near the brake and pulled it out from under the engine Bingo I thought, found a few rub thru's..........green and green red and one of the reds

I completely stripped all coverings, tape tubing etc , I repaired the rubs, cleaned and inspected each wire.
ohmed each wire to connector , all good
soldered the harness back to from were I cut it , and rerouted the harness around the engine , topside. put it all back together

and fired her up .............. still no tach, fuel , lights high low run brake

pulled the mess above the left foot well found a few spots that may rub thru later but not yet. So I'm a little stumped

I guess I'll take the pipes off again and try to find any more wire that may be rubbed through near the recoil / stator. otherwise she runs great

please advise,

Dan T

usually midskier , but I guess somebody already has that name(?)

addtional notes:

@ the black and white connectors near the hood hinge
ohm to ground
black connector
black = -0- / short to ground - engine
green black stripe = 39.5 ohms
green red stripe = open
red black strip = open

white connector
blue = 2.3 ohms
yellow = 2.3
yellow black stripe = open
green = 75.5

My 01 srx 700 sometimes does the identical problem as yours but only on start up for about 1 minute i loose all of the lights, the tack and guages. I was assured that it was a load relay that sticks when its cold and then releases. Yours might be burnt out and the other possibility is a chaffed wire in your mag area that could be shorting and possibly have burnt the load relay..

just my opinion!!!
good luck

Have you tried to run the sled with your helmet unplugged? I have had a similar problem with a bad helmet plug connection.

thank you for all the responses , I still down
yet to check the wiring on the hood side
with a meter, however nothing looks bad ,
all is in tact,

the 2 relays, have been checked with a power source and meter
the function as expected.

the harness that was once under the engine was removed cleaned inspected
repaired, and rerouted topside
next I'll be ohming the lighting coil a source told me .23 -.28 ohms (?)
hope that is what should be

with or with out the shield connected , still no lights head or tail / brake
tach or fuel guage
engine will not run with regulator unplugged............

all wiring up near the brake disk look good
2 white connectors coming from the engine
one with 2 white wires with green or red stripe
measures 195 ohms
it looks to be connected to a coil external to the flywheel

and a three wire connector all wires are white
meausred .4 ohms across all combos of the 3 wires
all combos also produce a voltage.................

I've put it away for a couple of days

just to make sure, your headlight relay (blue relay at the left footwell) does have continuity between the blue (positive tester probe) and yellow (negative probe) terminals when a 12v source is applied with negative battery terminal on black and positive on the green terminal?

Also, the load control relay (white relay at left footwell) with the battery (12v) positive hooked up to red terminal and negative hooked up to Brown/White terminal, there is continuity between positive tester on red and negative tester on blue?

The stuff you are describing to me sounds exactly as srx4life stated. Load control relay. The load control relay affects all your power to non-vital electrical components (gauges, lights, etc) but the sled will still run just the same without it functioning. The testing procedure I just gave you came right out of the SRX Service Manual.

Also, did you check the wiring that leads to the load control relay? I just realized you said you checked the relay but never said anything about the wiring.

Still Down

alright , I put the girl back together

here's what I know
14.62 v dc @ red and black on the V Reg ......steady from 3 -5K rpm

red wire leading to the load control relay intact -0- ohm from red on regulator
and not shorted to ground

brown white from load control relay to cdi intact -0- ohm connector to connector and open to ground

brown white pin @ cdi open to ground (not running)

when running shorting red to blue @ load control relay brings back all functions

so, do I just install a fused jumper between red and blue

or replace the V Reg because it's putting out over 12 volts..........

thanks

Dan T

knuckles still intact.........

bottom line:

Found several wires rubbed thru harness under engine, removed, repaired, rerouted.

Found one white from the stator with a dark indent near the connector, taped, twisted and covered it

Found potential rub thru's @ CDI where wires touch left foot well
taped those up

keep in mind the engine stator produces AC voltage
which is also good @ the voltage regulator
the voltage regulator is really a voltage regulator / rectifier
is changes the AC to DC and limits (regulates) the output
many other machines use AC for all electrical items (other than electric start models)

So I also have a bad regulator as my output is 14.6 volts AC
not 12 volts DC

if there is not DC @ the red wire from the regulator / rectifier, the CDI will not close the path to ground for the Brown / White wire, not allowing the load control relay to pull in, meaning no electrical services..........

find a reg/rect, from a 2000-02 srx or any year viper and see if it fixes the problem, too much voltage coming out, that would pop the bulbs in a hurry
