I put on 250 km's this weekend and my arms are killing me. My sled is darting terribly, what can I do to it? I noticed that the front shocks have too much preload, if I back them off will it help? I was also thinking of buying those easy steer plactic guides that fasten ahead of the runners. It's not enjoyable when you have to fight with it too keep it straight.

Shimming the skis really helps a lot. See this page

Shimming the ski's should fix the problem, but if your still not happy Simmons skis do not dart.

I shimmed our sxr 700 and what a difference!!!! I used an old piece of a slide and glued it to the bottom of the rubber mount in the rear, easy fix and CHEAP!!!
Have you played with your transfer rods I had tweaked mine in and took care of the darting problem last weekend. I'm just throwing out a thought
I will start with the pressure and check if I need to shim, I did install drop brackets to raise the rear so the front will also have changed now.

Just picked up a viper for my wife, same problem. The local yamaha dealer recomended woodies doolies, problem solved .Transformed that sled ,90% better. On my sled i run simmons skiis, i beleive they are the ultimate choice on most snowmobiles.

Doolies
Yes The Doolies Help But You Will Increase Drag And Lose Some Top End And Fuel Economy. Shimming It A Better Idea.

Is there a way to adjust the rear suspension to take a little bit of weight off the skies? and if so, how is it done? My runners a woren evenly and do not think shimming is MY answer.

Weight Off Skis.
Reduce The Length Of The Front Limiter Strap Until You Have About 3/8 To 1/2 Inch Of Thread Showing. Seriously The Shimming Works Magic. All My Yamahas Have Skis Shimmed. The Srx Is Also Running Stud Boy Deuce Bars. The Viper Is Shimmed And Is Running Woodys Doolies, And The Apext Is Running Shims And Stud Boy Deuce Bars.
Shimming Is Easy.. Remove The Ski And Install A 1/4 Shim Under The Rear Portion Of The Ski Bumber. Install The Ski And You Are Done. The Difference Even With The Stock Runners Is Unreal. If You Examine Your Current Ski Runner I Would Bet That The Front Portion Of The Runner Is Worn Out And The Rearmost Portion Is Still Sharp. The Shimming Corrects This Major Yamaha Design Flaw And Puts The Weight On The Rear Of The Steering Axis Rather Than In Front Of It. You Would Think That Yamaha Would Have Fixed This By Now..

Use weatherstrip adhevsive and a screw to keep it in place
3000miles and mine are still their with stock skies

you can adjust your limiter strap, get more track on the ground.

When you get them from Bergstroms they send you stainless steel screws. You can use permatex gasket maker too instead of weather strip adhesive.

Try shimming if you have a darting problem, the even wear on your runners does not mean that you don't need to shim to solve the darting problem. More pressure on the rear of the skis makes them tend to go straight and more in front makes them want to follow ruts.

Shimming
I Am Working On A New Approach To The Shimming Idea. I Am Making Some Tapered Aluminum Wedges That Will Go Between The Ski And The Rubber. Sort Of Like Caster Shims For Solid Axle Trucks. I Am Making Various Tapers. They Will Apply Even Pressure Over The Entire Rubber And It Willnot Crush. The Rubbers On My Apex Crushed And The Shim Was Reduced To Nothing. If They Work I Will Have Lots Of Them To Give Out.
