Speedo failed again after 15km
well all last season I went with no Speedo, Cable was bad, and I had replaced the Key that goes into the driveshaft. So I put the new cable on this year, and after first 15km it went out again.
I looked at the cable this weekend, its still fine, I figure the actual gauge is fine, I'm assuming the speedo Key went....but not 100% sure till I rip it open.
Couple questions. What could be causing this? Cable is fine now, But I also tried turning the speedo cable by hand, and the Km's never moved at all, should it move, or does it move that quickly, that the speedo would not move at all if the cable is turned by hand.
I need to take it apart and look, but i suspect the speedo key shredded, if I keep shredding speedo Key's that has to be another issue? Are there bearings in the housing that bolts to the tunnel under the secondary? Also I filled the rear of that housing, where the key goes with Lube, could that cause an issue, or is it more likely that the bearings in the housing are toast?
Next Time I go out, I'm gonna rip it off, and replace the key again, see how far I get, if it dies again quickly, I guess I'll pick up a new housing.

check the bearing on the drive axle.if it is bad the speedo key runs off center and does not last very long.

Yah that's what I am starting to suspectSno-Xr said:Most likely the gear(housing) on the end of the drive shaft. Its a common problem, it may seem to spin fine, but will ocasionaly catch and sheer the speedo key. My SRX is doing the same thing and I will need to buy a new gear housing.
Anyone have one in good shape to sell that will fit my sled?

Yah that's my plan, I'll spray some pen lube in there, and try and spin it and see if I can feel a spot that is tight.daman said:Check out that gear housing good,, i've seen 'em when old they start to turn very hard and or have hard/tight spots.

I put a post on a local board, and called for a price brand new...100 bones new, So i'd rather find one in good shape used...
