NO. They were NOT "L" rings

Thanks for posting the info from the Wiseco piston catalog. 2280 was replaced by 2222 ,so either way you still have the right piston. Like I said, I have same pistons you received running in my sled right now. Funny how you say it will not work?????? Sorry to all that had to see and deal with this.. Jeff Wurl
 
I just bought two on EBay. Flat rings and the same length skirts as the 77 Yamaha pistons where. Funny they are 2222PS. Jeff's had L rings and longer skirts that would have to be cut to work. 2222PS? Did they have different designs later? Dean

Could be a piston from a 433 gpx (+ oversize) they would have longer skirts. However the "L" ring has got me stumped. They did not have those that I am aware of. 2222 could be just a casting # on the wrist pin support (underside). I could not find an "L" ring on any 2222 type pistons in any of the OLD catalogs. Glad you got something that will work.
 
DEAN, AGAIN I JUST WAS NEVER FAMILAR WITH WIESCO BECAUSE I NEVER USED THEM. THE MORE I READ THIS I DO UNDERSTAND YOUR POINT. IT ALSO DOSE SOUND LIKE WHAT HE SOLD YA WAS FOR A GPX, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAD LARGER SKIRTS. L'' RINGS MIGHT BE FOR THE OLDER YAMAHA,s ENGINES LIKE A GP OR A SL. JUST A GUESS. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Like I told Dean, The L shaped rings are for SLEEVED cyliders , the FLAT rings are for chrome cylinders. The pistons are the same 2222PS for either ring. The rings are still available from Wiseco for $10.00 each. Dean got one set of pistons with flat rings and one set with L shaped rings. Both sets were brand new wiseco 2222PS pistons for a 76-77 SRX. The pistons are NOT the same. You can not use an L ring on a rail ring piston. I have 3 Wiseco pistons left for a '76-'77 SRX. They are 2222PS but only say 2222 on the piston.

THANK YOU. I was thinking for a while that I was going nuts. Jeff, You said that the flat ring is for a steel bore. Well the 77 was never a steel bore. Those pistons are for a L ring. The top of the pistons have matereial cut away for the L ring. If you put a flat ring on those pistons there's nothing on top of the pistons to hold the flat piston rings in place. See what I mean? The ring will rip the top of the piston apart. You can see the ring when they are installed in the cylinder. Thanks Dean
 
L ring

The statement that the "L" ring is for a sleeved cylinder in not correct in this case. Flat rings, depending on the face surface determines what it is used in sleeved or chrome. "L" type rings are for the very top of the piston and the piston is designed for that ring and that ring ONLY. (and yes it can be seen thru the spark plug hole) I can't seem to find an "L" ring used on any Wiseco piston ever used on a Yamaha of any kind and I checked Wiseco's catalog's along way's back. (I did find one for a 1971 ET300, wrong bore size)

Thanks Millerlight. I still can't beleive Jeff won't let me return these four L ring pistons. I have no use for them. I bought two flat ring Wiescos on ebay. They are stamped 2222 and are correct skirts lenghts and flat rings for the 77 srx. The look like the original 77 yamaha pistons. Dean
 
If you look in the old Wiseco catalogs from the 70s it will list the ring number (this case 2697) and tell you which ring to use for what type of cylinder. (chrome,sleeved,ect). The set of pistons i sold Dean were assembled for a 76 SRX 440 with sleeved cylinders. I have those same pistons i sold Dean with flat rings for chrome cylinders running in my SRX right now, so don't tell me they won't work. Jeff Wurl

Ring # 2697 only tells me that ring was for a bore size of 2.697", that's what that # means. In Wiseco's "OLD" catalog for a 76-77 srx chrome bore (std.) the correct ring would be 2697csm for a *re-sleeved cyl. the ring part # is 2697cs. Again these rings are .039" flat ring's (both of them)
The "L" ring is .075" and will not fit in a ring grove that's designed to fit a .039" ring that's just mathematics.
"L" type rings are designated by the suffix "L","LM","LC","LCM" after the ring # (bore size) inc. 2697.
76-77 Yahama Wiseco piston old part # for a std. bore chrome cyl. piston was 2222ps and the rings for that piston (chrome bore) were 2697csm.
This Wiseco catalog that I have goes back to cover Yahama sleds to 1971 and the only piston I could find that used that "L" type of ring was for a 1979-81 (part # 2299ps) ET300. Even at .060" (p6) over bore the bore size would still be too small (2.264") SORRY!!!!!!!!!!! You would think I sell Wiseco pistons.

I'm thinking maybe someone had these for a GPX and cut the skirts so they would work. The top of the crowns being cut to except L rings could of been again someone thinking that The L ring would be better. I know a lot of engine builders will tell you that the L ring will make more power. Do you think someone was redesigning these pistons you had? I'm just trying to figure out this whole mess. How many of these pistons did you have? Where did they come from? I know there was a lot of guys trying different stuff out there for years. I'm going to talk to a guy I know at Wiesco Monday. Mybe he can figure this all out. Any other old timers know anything out there that could help? Don't forget the replacment GPX weisco piston had 2222 inside the piston also and they had the longer skirts. Dean
 
So he sells me junk and then buys the right ones on Ebay. That's right Jeff. Your selling the wrong ones that don't work in the 77 srx's and now your buying the right ones 2222ps on ebay. What a piece of work!! Dean
 
I just done talking to Al from wiesco. The L rings and pistons cut out for L rings are not for 76/77 srx's. You can not run flat rings on cut out pistons. The 2222PS was used for many different motors. They machined out things different for different appalcations. The part #s 2222 and later 2280 where for the 76/77 srx's and they had full crowns on the top of the pistons. So. Jeff the pistons you sold me are not for an srx. They all have the crowns cut out. If you are running these pistons in your sled it will blow up. You can call Wiesco your self and talk to Al. I have been racing these sleds for over 33 years and I never had any problems with the Wiesco pistons until now. If you think that your still right, then you have some serous problems. You can't run flat rings on a piston that's beem machined out for L rings. I want my money back. $420. Did Ebay call you? They will. Dean

Dean You Need To Get A Life. I No Longer Deal In 76-77 Srx's. I Bought The Damn Pistons For Two Reasons. #1 You Were Bidding On Them . #2 I Have A Good Friend That Was Looking For A Set. Don't Jump To Conclusions. Jeff Wurl
 
Ha. So the good friend gets the good pistons. You can buy the right ones from Aaen. Wiesco builds 10 at a time. Talk to al about running the flat ring on a L cut piston. Won't work. Dean
