I have a 99 vmax 700 that is having a starting problem when it's warm.

When it's warmed up it needs to have the throttle cracked slightly to start.

When it's cold it's ok.

I've had the carbs cleaned (both by myself and the local yamaha dealer) and had the dealer adjust them as required.
I believe it's main jets are 3 sizes lower than stock (considering going 2 up so it's one lower than stock)...wifes machine and I rather it be reliable than as fast.

Anyhow...the dealer tells me that the 3 cyl yamahas always need to have the throttle cracked to start. I think this is a load of crap. My SRX never needed it, though they never worked on it.

Anyone know what really is set wrong? I'm thinking fuel screws are set wrong...rich?

Only 6000 km. Good compression...runs like a charm otherwise.

Sometimes after a longer run and slowed down to a stop, but the motor still idling at 3500 it gags until it idles down to 1500 to 2000...then it's fine.

they are right when they say you need throttle to start when warm. I have to do this with both my yamahas and so do the yamys I ride with.

cracking the throttle.....

^Yup allot of time's a tripple will need that,even a twin..

^that would be caused by a lean pilot circit, pull carb's and adjust the fuel
screw out 1/4 turn,,should stop that from happening..

Yep, same with my '99 SX. I have had to do that since the day it came off the show room floor. It's typical for Yamaha triples.

99 Vmax

Yes it is normal to give some throttle when the engine is WARM. Seems the flatslide carbs seal very good, the heat swells the carbs, closing off the air intake. Give'r some throttle !!

Well...if that's the case...has anyone ground out part of the butterfly.

Seems non-yamaha like that they'd let it be like that. We must be missing something.
If it was a polaris...i could accept that!
