You got correct information from the rep. guy, In the early 98-99 srx the mag did indeed run the hottest, thats why they are stagger jetted to the mag not the pto like 2000 and newer are. First thing to check is if it has the correct jets in the mag,it will be the next size larger then the center and pto cylinders are.
Youll need to repalce that piston as if you run it,it will ruin the cylinder at the very least, once the ring is exposed to the flame front and sees the combustion temps it becomes very red hot, soft and will catch the exh port top and gouge its way into the cylinder as it goes up and down.

MRVIPER700, thanks for the confirmation and clarification. I most certainly will replace that piston and rings ASAP. Checking the jetting on the carbs is a good idea. I just spoke with the last owner and he said when he bought it, performance pipes were installed. He removed the pipes and installed the stock pipes because of noise issues. I'd be willing to bet that it had stock jetting while the performance pipes were installed. My worry is that the cylinder is damaged. Does anyone know where I could source a good used 98 srx 600 cylinder? I'll keep you guys posted if I run into any other surprises along the way. Thanks for the input, you guys have been very helpfull.
