Yea, single pipe, clutched, 1.25 rip, reed notch, rejetted, bored can. Running was alot of WOT between turns. Also, miles were GPS'd, not odo.moss said:

Ran again this weekend... thought I drove alot smoother on the flipper as I had my son on with me... still only got about 10.5 mpg... what could cause excessive fuel usage? Also, plugs looked real white at 1/4 check (40ish mph), good at 1/2 (60ish) and a bit wet/dark at WOT (80+). Brand new plugs, so not sure the read was consistent of my old plugs. Sounds like low speed is lean, screws at 1 3/4 out... should I go 1/4 in to fatten? Don't spend alot of time at that position, but did notice it doesn't smoke near as much at idle/warmup as it used to. Thanks-

well, We had a 96 xcr 600 triple with the stock 3-1 pipe. We got 15mpg all day long, for a good 4000 miles that we owned it
My almost stock motored 00 xc600SP VES gets 16mpg all day, even wailing on it.
Our stock motored indy 500 EFI gets a good 14mpg, while the pretty well built indy trail 488 gets like 8-10mpg.
Our 600 twin Venture with smart carbs gets 10 mpg, no better , no worse.
I know if it were a 600 triple or a 700 triple it would get better mileage.
A friend had an 01 or so 700 red headed vmax and it got 15+ mpg.

I had a 2000 SXR 600. Stock I got about 12-13 mpg, then I put a bender clutch kit and reed spacers on it and not only did it wake it up alot but the milage went up to 14-15 pretty consistantly.

the xcr we had never fouled a single plug. Matter of fact I dont think we ever changed plugs in the few years we had it. It never needed any attention.
The sled handled well, but then again we had the xtra 10 in ours (96 xcr was the first to get that skid), so it is a bit different than an XLT.
but back to the gas mileage, if it is only getting ten mpg, something is wrong with it, as evidenced by plug fouling. We had a clutch kit on ours, and while that woke it up, it did not seem to use any more fuel.
I will check what my coworker gets with his 95 xlt. AFAIK, those sleds got great mpg's until you threw triple pipes on them, so not unlike the yami single piped triples.

The new 600 HO motor isnt too much different and pulls around that for mpg's.
The 500, should get 15 or so mpg. our 94 efi 500, and 2 friends have early 90's carbed indy 500's get ~15mpg or so as well. edit.. I saw your 14.44 mpg, so that makes sense.

Well, at the begining of the season we cleaned the carbs. I didn't mess with the settings, b/c my uncle whom I bought it from said that it was fine. I didn't want to challenge him. I guess at the end of this season I'll set the carbs back to the stock settings, and work from there for next winter.
Wouldn't the reeds in your xcr help the mpg?

Alll the xlt / xcr sleds I have evr been on, or known folks that had them have always had very good mpg from them.
Now early xlt/ xcr's had crank (pto) side bearing issues until polaris added an extra oil line over on that side. its an easy aftermarket fix to installa better (double I think) bearing ont he side that is known to go. 97+ models had this extra oil line, but some 96's did as well, our 96 xcr had this line as well. We just sold this sled this fall, and I put a majority of the miles on it.

I own a 2000 sx700r triple and a 2001 Phazer 500 twin. My son and I rode 100 miles together and then filled them up to check our fuel economy. They were pretty much neck and neck with each getting just shy of 12 mpg.

compare a 700 triple, to a 700 twin and as long as the engine tech is the same (reed valve, LC, carbed and no PV's) and the triple will get better mpg at trail speeds.
Also, there is a big difference in a FC twin's mpg from a LC one. Case in point the indy trail 488 FC vs the 488 LC indy 500. the LC indy500 will get a lot better mpg and have more power to boot than the FC trail. these 2 engines are nearly identical besides the method of cooling. even when stock the indy trail 488 we have never got better than maybe 11 mpg, while any less than 14mpg on the 500's ( many friends have had several carbed indy5's in addition to our EFI version) would mean something is wrong.
I am pretty sure if you compared a 01 sxr500 to an 01 phazer you would notice the LC sxr 500 would get much better mpg.

No surprise on mpg's. The 600 red top never topped 11 mpg since new. Even since clutched properly same mpg. The Viper 700 with power valves gets 4-6 mpg better.The new doo poo powerteks are 20-25mpg. When ya start doing big mileage days with the price of gas $1.50-$1.75 per liter up north QC and getting 10mpg you notice, sometimes fuel stops can be 100+ miles inbetween.

I have a 97 sx 700 and a 98 srx 700.My wife and I rode 105 miles 2 weeks ago and to refill I put 8.3 gallons in the sx and 8.7 gallons in the srx.I had just put a new 192 picked track on the srx and I was out doing wheelies in front of my wife.So if it is a red head or pv engine mine are very close to the same milage.

If you have an XLT 600 and you're not getting 15+ m.pg. on the trail then either something is wrong or you're hard on the throttle.

I make it work all the time on the trail and i'm 220lbs with the stock carb settings at 300 -500ft elevation, maybe its to rich, but it runs perfect. Anyone suggest different carb set up?(SAFE)

I have a 700 venture and 4 of my freinds also have 700 because of the fuel eco mine is a 98 others are a 97 to 2000

Swapping a red head 700 in my chassis sounds like too much work. Now if the 600 twin grenades beyond rebuildable status, then a 700 red head is going in.
