Hey all

A friend of mine has a 97 SX700 with roughly 11000 kms on it, and as of right now, is running horrible. It all started weeks ago on a very cold night, where all of a sudden, it seemed like it was running on two cylinders, and it sounded like it was running on two, but it definatly wasnt. The funny thing is that at idle, it really sounded like it was running on 3, but once you gave it gas, you could hear one of the cylinders not firing. But it didnt backfire or anything abrupt. The clutch side cyl. was the one acting up, and when you pulled the cap off, the rps dropped a little, but it didnt stall, but if you pulled off one of the other two caps, it would die.

Thinking that one of the carbs just iced up, tried running it with the choke partially on and it did nothing. Also changed all of the plugs with new ones. Since that day, there was a few warm spells where all of the ice melted off the sled as it sat outside as the temp. was above freezing. Tried running the sled again, and it did the same thing, except if you gave it any gas, it would stumble very badly.

This sled before had its stator changed in the past with a new one. But I am thinking that this is an electrical problem still as the sled ran perfect all season so far before now, and the carbs havent been touched, and it has good gas in it wih stock exhaust and intake. Also, sled has good compression and runs good ipone oil.

Anyone have any ideas before I dive into trying to fix this problem and finding out exactly whats going on?

Thanks in advance!

Had the very same problem with my 97 SX 700 before I got rid of it.

Turned out to be a coil and the new owner found the problem. It seemed to run fine when it was up in the power band but way down low, there was something not right

Had a similar problem with my 97 SX 700 too. Couldn't rev more than about 4000 rpm, then it started to backfire and lose power. Turned out to be the stator.

I would start out by cleaning the carbs and set to spec, then move to coil,
plug boot's,wires. etc..check for in spec, you said comp.was good, what was it??

could aslo check stator,i was new few years ago but could be bad again.

Are you sure that it didn't burn a piston? The problem started on a very cold night which makes for a much leaner air/fuel mixture than if its 20F out. Might want to verify that the it has three whole pistons and didn't smear the rings before chasing electrical problems.

If a piston is burned the comp wouldn't be good. I only had half the comp in the barrel where a piston was burned compared to the other two.

You can have smeard ring lands and still have "ok" comp.,but yea usally
burn down's comp. is very low....

i'd like to know what comp is on that cyl?????

I had my plug caps go bad on my 97. theres a diode of some kind on a spring inside the cap and it seems to wear down and falls apart. take the cap off and shake it ...if it rattles, it probably is bad!

X2 check the plug caps they should okm out at 5000
My 97 had two bad caps this year

Thanks for the responses, this thing might be fixed sooner than I expected!

Going to check the compression and get an actual number tomorrow.

Also, going to check those spark plug caps, seems like a possible source of problem.

If problem doesnt get fixed, will clean the carbs and see.

Thanks again guys, ill post any updates.
