96 vmax xt gas mileage

What are you getting for gas mileage? I have a 96 vmax600 xt and right now i am getting 9.5 mpg. My son has the same sled and he is getting 10. I had a problem at the begining of year when i was getting 6 mpgs. I cleaned the carbs, tank, pump and replaced the fuel filter and lowered my needle from 2 to 1.5.
 
I bought the 600 XT the year it came out , and I never got very good mileage. I think it may be the nature of the 600cc twin beast. But I would be curious if anyone has found a way to get better mileage also.
 
You can't too too much other then what was listed as far as dropping the needle, going to the thinner head gasket etc... I personally wouldn't mess around with it too much if your close to 9 or 10mpg thats about avg. I am at about 11-12 but am running a little too lean so i need to move the needle and will drop to about 10 or 9 i assume once that is done.
 
check your jetting vs stock,then check plug color and wash,should be able
to jet down somwhere in the range like the other men said,should help..
 
I rode 125 miles today on my '95 Vmax 600 and used 9 gallons equaling nearly 14 mpg. Not running lean either, if anything it was loading up a bit in the hills. If my sled will get that mileage there's no reason any Vmax 600 shouldn't be able to.

Try dropping your needle a clip position, just watch your plugs.

96's weren't the best on gas milage. They do wear belts and clutches quick and that will just make things worse, keep a good belt on it and keep the deflection adjusted, check your primary, when the primary starts going that thing will over shift and use lots of gas. Also, since they wear belts alot, the belt dust always seems to end up in the mouth of the carb, if you look at the lower mouth of the carb and it's all black and dirty, clean it, there is an air jet at the bottom which when it gets dirt in it causes the carbs to go rich quick. That sled just needs a little more TLC than most.
 
find a earlier vmax and get the gears out of it Changing the gears in the chaincase will bring your milage up and top speed.
 
make sure the clutches are in good order,change the emulsion tubes/needle jets,when you get over 5000 mi.Viberation opens up the holes causing fuel consumption.
