Hi guys,
I'm running GYT twins on my 600 Vmax and while I have it tuned fairly well, the sled still is a touch rich in the mid range when temps are a bit warmer. I always see 10+mpg and typically average about 13mpg and only dip down to the 10mpg range when it's 32+ degrees out, so gas mileage is good.
On Sunday it was warm out, 34 degrees, gas mileage dropped to about just over 10mpg but the sled was rich in the mid range, plugs were black and oily.
Today, temps cooled and were in the 20's for most of the day, sled was back to 13 mpg, but still could tell it was a touch rich in the mid, plugs were black but not as oily.
The sled runs its best when its 15 degrees or lower out and I'll see as much as 14 mpg when it's nice and cold out.
So my question is if the BR9ECS plug would help clean this problem out at all. I've read in some posts that some have used this plug in piped sleds.
Don't get me wrong, the sled runs good and I'm happy with the gas mileage and performance but I'm looking for as close to perfection as I can get across a broad spectrum of temps without having to change jets or install a "dial a jet" mechanism.

You average 13mpg with a twin piped 600? Our smart carbed 97 600 twin can get no better than 10mpg, even with a stock engine and supposed jetting adjustment for temp and elevation from the smart carb.
But I understand the search for perfection
what plugs are you running now?

Yeah, average 13, actually saw 13.8 mpg on Saturday. The sled gets great mileage for a 600 twin. But there is still a slight richness between 30-35. I think the sled uses too much oil, I'm going to check the cable setting and try leaning the oil down a little.
I've been running BR9ES's since I"ve owned the sled. I ran the BR9ECS's today, no real difference. The temps were cold today though so the sled ran great.

thats were my richness was also.if you followed my post about the sled i went to 1st notch and 1 1/4 on air screw and have been very happy since .300 miles and counting since ive done it and she runs strong .went out today and it was -18 what a great ride.maybe my setting would not work for you as you ,rs is piped?Exciter570 said:Yeah, average 13, actually saw 13.8 mpg on Saturday. br9es and br9ecs has basically no differrence between the 2.
they are the same heat range, with the only real difference being that the ECS is a non gappable type electrode, and the ES you can adjust the gap.
try the iridium version, I have had very good results on my other toys with iridium plugs. my bike for example the efi is rich at idle, and used to foul the stock plugs occasionally. after switching to iridium plugs, it has never fouled since, and thatas been like at least 12000 miles. probably more to be honest. should be part number BR9EIX for NGK's. they should be ~9 dollars each.

Being piped I worry about going down to the #1 position on the needle, but I can always try it and just watch the plugs.
If going down to #1 makes me almost think it might be a better idea to drop the mains a size and have the needle in #2. But it is good to know you've been out in the extreme cold and haven't had any problems.

the guy that use to own my sled had a single stinger pipe on it and it still bogged at that speed.so i felt that going to what i did would be ok as i have the stock pipe on there.

i used to run the br9eya in my cat, its a split electrode and fires the same heat but better dispersal which may take care of some of those issues. they cost more but they won't foul as easy.
