Bud of mine just bought a zr900, how strong are they???He has been looking for awhile and found a good deal and was always a cat man. he's been talking smack in a nice friendly way but was wondering how my piped clutched viper would fair and my rx1 filters and clutched would do against a 500 mile freshend up zr? my sleds both have 6,000 miles on them and I wouldn't be ashamed if they were alittle behind if they are because I never came across one.
lol, 500 miles and already freshened up, lol.. good kitty, kitty.
However I know nothing about the zr900, but I say you make him work for it at least.

500 milkes on a fresh motor is what I was getting at. But the sled did have to be refreshed after 2300 miles. I heard they were strong and would like to know a comparison of the sleds. Yes even 2300 miles on a sled is low if you ride are brand but some people only see today not tomorrow! MY ? is how well do they run and what should I expect whith my higher mile well taken care of sled?

I think you will be just fine with your piped Viper. I have played a little with my stock viper and they walk me pretty good. My 99 SRX stock would run side by side and had a little longer legs on the big end. Go get him!
Tuning, Conditions, Driver - Those 900's can be really fast if all is good.
Just make him hold the bars at idle for ten minutes before you race. His arms will have fallen asleep by then (a more vibrating sled you'll never meet).
I rode a buddy's for ten minutes and couldn't wait to get off of it. There was no happy RPM. Of course after he rode my SRX for that ten minutes he too saw what a rattle trap it was. It was a torque monster and a good drag sled, but I couldn't ride one for a couple miles let alone all day.

I found them pretty even with my stock 01 SRX.
I have raced a brand new stock one with my 99 srx and out of the hole we were even and then at about 660 i would start to pull away and at about 1000 feet i would be about 1 sled length ahead. The zr 900 stock is 150HP and for a 900 i was not that impress. When the zr900 is setup right i don't think your going to touch him. But if yours is setup right and his is stock should be a good race. A buddy just bought ZR900 3 weeks ago with 1500 miles and the clutch blew apart already.
My brother has a 06 zr 900 (stock) And I have a srx with a edge skid and turks clutching and we are very close. If we have raced 5 times I might of beat him 3 times up to a 100mph. We have not raced on the top end but I was on my brothers sled and racing a Attak from 80 to 119 on the attak speedo and the zr 900 started to creep on the attak by about a half a sled, It was very close. Guy on the attak was a 300 pound guy so I would say they are close. I love the 900 its a fun sled. Good luck I think it will be close but if your Viper is a good runner I think you can take him. I just want to say My SRX hooks up hard with the new skid so you might need to work on your hookup.
they suppose to have problem with piston those huge 2 cylinder kitty cat ...they have heavy piston

I picked up a 04' ZR900 with 1600 miles on it last week CHEAP and here is my thoughts on it.
ZR900's pull HARD to about 90-100 (with the coupling blocks removed). After that the belt starts to slip and the engine over rev's with the stock clutching. Compared to my piped Viper....the ZR will eat it up in the 1/4 mile but by the 1/2 mile the Viper should be closing in and posibly passing the ZR (depending on set up). If the ZR is properly clutched the only way a piped Viper will pass it is on a long stretch of lake where the tripples shine.
The reason the engines can blow a piston is because the exhaust valves run REAL close to the piston. It can catch a ring and take out a cylinder. The fix is a $15 APV shim that will space the valve back a few thousands. The shims also help the engine idle smoother. On mine the handlebars don't shake at all.
On a last note let me tell you....the ZR's torque is incredible. Going 35-40 if you lean back on the sled and pin it you will lift the ski's 10-12".
I still would prefer to have an Apex but the price was to good to pass up on the ZR.

Thanks for the replies, My viper does need a better track. I'll run him with my rx1 it does seem to come out of the hole alot better with the heavy hitters & air kit believe it or not. He does have a clutch on his tried to ask what it was he really doesn't know. I will take alook at it tomorrow and see if I can figure it out. thanx again!!
I guess my years of having the faster sleds caught up with me oh! well I still have the same sleds while every else had to fix or buy others. It only takes money to make it faster but they never let me down once so why mess with it,unless he rubs it in which I never did than look out turbo on the way for next season! he! he!

Ditto. My buddy has one and we are pretty close on my 01SRX. I seem to edge him up top a bit though. They for sure aren't slugs.
i raced a guy with one and i had a not so good clutch setup in and we stayed even in the distance we raced(about 900ft)but i was in powder and he was on hard packed but whatever,a few weeks later i seen him at a local radar run and beat his speed by 5 mph,oh and i raced him with a 01 srx,i ran a 108 and he ran a 103,so you should have a pretty good race with your viper

ya cat viberator build now ride 500 miles build again lmao , u could not give me one it would, ent be cheap enough, got 3 cat guys i ride with they have the hoods up more than they ride, oh ya a spare tow rope lol, no thanks Al Larson
A friend of mine just blew up his diamond drive on his ZR900 with 1800 miles. So he went and bought a 07 F1000. Problem solved so he said. We'll see how this one lasts. When it ran, it was a quick sled. My RX would take it out of the hole. I have the HH weights on mine with the filters and a CPR clutch kit. His 900 was set up by Goodwin. He would get me top end, but it did not have a prayer out of the hole against the RX. Never raced it with the SRX. His drive blew up before I had a chance. I'm sure the 1000 will be tough to beat.

I have a 2004 zr 900 efi and had a clutched 2002 viper last year. My diamond drive went at 2500 miles ! 2004 was a bad year for them.
My zr 900 took my friends attak by about the lenth of one sled.
His speedo was reading 122 mph mine at 112 mph.
GPS for the attak 102 mph mine 105 mph.
I cant see a viper taking down zr 900, but for some reason my viper felt faster than the zr on top !
As for the f1000 dead even with my zr 900 and a very pissed off f1000 owner.
The zr 900 handles like a dream and even corners better than most new machines but quality and that tripple engine sound goes to yamaha.
I think im going back to a viper or even a srx for that reason.

If your serious on an SRX...I just saw one on Ebay with ZERO miles. Brand new. It's very tempting!
There has not been a better groomed trail sled made in my opinion!

for 6 +++ grand i think i would feel guilty driving that machine and would rather keep it as a show piece !SNOWDOG said:If your serious on an SRX...I just saw one on Ebay with ZERO miles. Brand new. It's very tempting!
