Well, during a nice "spirited" ride on the w/e, the Viper's exhaust note suddenly become much, much louder.

Happened quite quickly too.

It sounds like the Viper has blown its silencer apart, or the packing out, or possibly a hole somewhere else?

No trouble lights, no difference in performance - just way too loud!

Has this happened to any of you Viper owners? Common problem?

Any idea what I should look for?

Mr. Ted

Did you check your exhaust to make sure your not melting a hole in the belly pan.
is all the exhaust coming out the outlet?
might of broke a weld or a spring and the pipe & silencer separated?

There really isn't any packing inside. It has three different chambers in it ,all made from metal or metal mesh. I had one apart once. The mesh could start burning through though. I noticed mine has a slightly louder sound.

8000 kms on sled. 5000 miles.

The funny thing is that the sound grew louder quite suddenly - over about a 5 second period.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Ehaust donut out of place - from where exactly? Where the pipe meets the silencer?

Any other details would be appreciated. Afraid I'm not terribly technically oriented. Hoping I can detective it out online as much as possible and then pop the hood and see where sound/exhaust may be exiting.

Pop the hood, fire it up and listen closely to determine where the excess sound is coming from. You should be able to find it.

Well, it's the manifold or "Y-pipe" exiting from the cylinders, joining everything together to take it to the single pipe.

The manifold itself appeared ok(and that's why I couldn't diagnose anything trailside) until I followed your advice(thanks guys) and started it up and felt around while everything was cold.

It's underneath the manifold where a loonie-size hole has rusted right through. Ouch.

So, it's new manifold time. Anyone know how much a new one goes for?

Will also look at the salvage yards and try to grab a used one - anyone know how long a job to pull one off and to throw one on?

Thanks,

Mr. Ted

Hey guys - just wanted to thank y'all for your advice.

Grabbed a used manifold, got it welded up and installed nicely with new gaskets for pretty cheap. Sounds great again.

While we were at it we popped out three shot bearings on the idler wheels and did a quick once over.

Running nice!

Hope to get out a couple more times before the spring's here...

Mr. Ted

Glad to see between two forums, you managed to get your answer. I'd start here first next time though, lol.

I've also had a backfire and had the exhaust donut blow out, sled was way loud after that, Donuts are where the pipe hooks up to the manifold, check the can side too, did you break a spring ?
