Follow up Mid Range/Fuel Mileage

I took my 96 XT 600 out today and did 40 miles.It ran great for the first 20 miles then it started to miss in the mid range. At the end of the day I got 6 mpgs. I took the carbs apart again for the 5th or 6th time. Again the pilot jets were clogged , but nothing else was clogged or dirty. I cleaned the carbs again and put them back. I then took the air box off and found little particles of something in the box. I then took the air filter out and when I did little black particles fell all over the place. I think what is happening is the carbs are sucking in the pieces from the air filter. Your thoughts please.
Next question is when you take the air box off there is a tiny screw right before the slide. Should that screw be set all the way in or is it adjustable. When I blow air threw it, the air comes out the pilot jet. Next the pilot screw is factory set at 2 turns. If I want less fuel would I turn it in or out. At idle the plugs seem to really be black and oily?
 
Just got back from a 20 mile ride. I took the air filter out before the ride and the sled started missing between 4 and 5 ths rpms right away. Before with the filter in it would do it after and hour or so. Just finished removing carbs and again found the pilot jet and the small screw at the mouth of the carb that goes to the pilot jet clogged. At the mouth of the carb it almost looked like sand an oil. Also the rubber groumets that the carbs slide into on the air box side had some fuel and sandy material, the same stuff that is in the mouth of the carb. It seems like I am sucking in debris from the air box and not sure from where. Is there any other place it could be coming from or is the airbox the cause.Could it come from the pulse or the vent hose's. But again it is only at the mouth of the carb, pilot and small screw at the mouth. Everything else in the carb is clean.
 
can't beleive the problems your having...did you take the filter out of the hood? take the air box off and open it up and look..
 
Hi daman. I took everything apart yesterday. Cleaned the airbox out (spotless) and removed the airfilter and cleaned the carbs . Road today with filter removed and it started acting up right away. Came home took it apart and found everthing clogged. It seems to be coming from the air box. I going to call my dealer tomorrow to see if I can get some type of filter for it. Do you think it could come from the pulse or vent hose's? The mouth of the carb is getting dirty. It seems to be going in that small jet at the mouth of the carb ( not sure what that little jet is) then it makes it way to the pilot jet.. HELP
 
your belt ok not coming appart?? OEM belt??

if your pilot jet is getting pluged you got somthing in the gas still??
 
Can you tell me what that small jet at the mouth of the carb is for. I know it goes to the pilot jet. Also the gas that comes out of the bowl is clean. Also the main jet is clean.With the new fuel filter and the cleaning of the tank I really dont think it is coming from the tank. Also the valve seat is clean. I really think something is getting in the air box going in that small jet at the mouth of the carb then blocking up the pilot jet. Also can you tell me exactly what does and how does the pilot jet work?
 
If your talking the air ports at the back of the carbs?, these meter how much air the idle and low speed circuts gets.

On the air box side there is 2 small holes on the bottom of each carb. 1 has a screw with a small hole in it and the other one is just a hole. The one with the small screw has a small hole in it witch leads to the pilot jet. That small screw gets clogged and so does the pilot jet. The pilot jet only gets clogged in the main hole. Never the holes at the bottom of the pilot jet. It seems like the small hole is sucking in debris to the pilot jet. Every other part of the carbs are spotless.
 
My belt looks fine. I do not have any black dust from the belt on the side of my carbs. I look at my sons sled and he has belt dust all over his carb. His sled runs great. Do think it is possible the junk is getting in that small screw and going into my pilot. I can't see the junk coming from the pilot and going into the small screw.
 
Now I just have to figure out how its getting in there and from where. I know when I had my air filter in it took longer for the sled to run crappy. As soon asI took out the filter it ran crappy right away. I just cant for the life of me see where on the sled all that crap is coming from. I guess ill bring it back in the garage and start going threw it. Thanks daman
 
when she's miss'en blip the choke see if it come's outa it,,with out the filter
it may.........run a tad lean..
 
I did that today. When I hit the choke the sled got worse. I ran the sled for about a mile at 5000 rpms and did a plug check. The plug was on the lean side but it looked ok. Remember I already dropped the neddle from the 2 postion to 1.5. I also did a plug check at idle and the plug was a little oily.I think if I can figure this out it will run great.

so that was at mid range then huh??,,you could stand to go leaner that's
for sure...
 
So you think that is to rich. Or could that be from the pilot being blocked. That was at 5000 rpms for about 1 mile when the sled was running bad. So would I drop the needle to the 1 postion or should I figure out my problem first?

No I just did a edit. They are a dark brown. Should i drop the needle to the 1 postion it is on 1.5 right now. Also at idle the plugs oily black (no plug foul). I was going to turn the pilot screw in to lean it out.
