My Dad went riding with us last weekend on his 96 XT 600.It has stock clutches, stock everything but plastic kimpex skis and a preditor track. I had my SRX 600 and my wife had her SXR 600, we get about the same milage at just over 10 miles per gal. My Dad got just over 3 miles per gal. He just got his sled back from the shop because he had his carbs cleaned, but before he took it their his low end was bad, like running with the choke on. Top end feels good though. The shop cleand the carbs but didn't fix the low end problem, because they said they would have to try out different jetting options and it would run around $400.00 bucks. I just recieved my Olav Aaen's Carb Tuning Handbook in the mail, I've started reading it but figured I would ask you guys for some advice also, any ideas?

Damn does he have a hole in the gas tank!!!!!!!
you need to find a starting point,pull carbs and see where jetting is
at,jets/needle pos./float height/pilots screws,,check if stock set up
and post back.
then need to run through range's,low, mid,top and see what plugs are
tell'en ya.
check track tension,ski aliment, what kinda lug height on that predator track?

The sled is up north at my dads house,so I can't find out anything till the weekend. I think the track is 1 3/8, I'll check this weekend. I put the track on this fall, it came on a SX700 I parted out, it was brand new. I cleaned the carbs before he took it into the shop and when I put them back on it ripped until they filled up. Atleast that is what it seems, have you ever heard of this?

No but I did get 3 gallons a mile once and the drain screws on the bottom of the carb float bowls unscrewed them selves about 50 miles in to the trip.
Something is really wrong but if it is running "Good" on the top end I would start looking for a leak first. There is no way to burn that much gas in a 2 cycle motor and have it perform. You would be drowning the motor in fuel.
Out of curiosity how was his oil usage?

Holy Crap!!
Geez, I complain about 6mpg, but at least I am feeding a 4 cylinder beast that is known for eating fuel!!
As the other guys say, something is very wrong, carbs or fuel tank leak???
I had a 94-Vmax 600 & always got at least 10-12mpg out of it riding in the mountains. Something screwy going on, especially after the shop did their thing..Hmmmmmm???
Good luck finding the problem.

My Dad is almost 70 and he rides like it. The only time we went over 25mph is when we were on oil field roads, for the most part we rode very slow. With riding so slow it runs like the choke is on but it isn't. I'm gonna check the track tension and needle position first thing. Any other advice?

Well, if it was running "like the choke is on", that sounds "fat" to me.
If you never really rode it much above 25 & it was "smoking" or "fat", then that would be in the clip settings I think.
If I was in your shoes, I think I would take it for a 5-6 mile ride at normal speeds, feel it out in all ranges & listen to how that motor is really running.
If your just "puttering" along at 25mph, & driving like a lil old feller ( not picking on your dad here) you are not going to get the true "read" on the sled.
Also, I would check all fuel lines to make sure its not also leaking some where.
Obviuosly, when you get to the sled while its been parked, you can look for that before firing it up.

New track WAAAY to tight maybe? If it was all the carbs you would think it would foul plugs like a mad man. Check for areas of resistance.

I took the sled out and I think it was 40mph where it started clear up. Below 40mph it runs really rich, I'll have to check but I think it was around 40mph. When I put the track on we did 3 tracks that night, my SRX, my little brothers SXR and my Dads XT. No problems on the SRX and SXR but on the XT I have the rear axle loose enough to where the nyloc nuts are flush with end of the threads and its still tight. Any ideas?

Oh and i just got back from the gas station with the wifes vmdlx 500
topping it back off from last sat's ride,calculated out to 10 MPG
and that was bust'en powder 75% of the time,if we would have been on
packed groomed trails it would have done much better,i,'m pleased with
the machine..
so you can do better,just gota get your jetting dialed in....

Yes the track is 121 and I'll back those nuts off until they come off, but by doing that will I still have plenty of clearence between the rails and the track with the axle so far forward?

I re-read your post,,i thought you were putting the skid back in and needed
more room...lol, leave the nuts on yes..lol.
not much else you can do if the nuts are back off that far..track may need to strech..

Thanks I guess I didn't know that tracks came tight and stretched out some? I never bought one new.

yep, they stretch. even in sled manuals they mention this for the original owner.
1-3/8" track? from an SX it should have been a .75" track, if it was a stock track.

It wasn't a stock SX track, I'm pretty sure it is a Camoplast Intense Track. I thought it was a predator after looking in my catalog it looks more like the Intense.

Tracks will stretch quite a bit the more miles that you put on them!

There is a pretty easy way to tell if there is a massive fuel leak in the engine bay. The aluminum will be real clean and wet. Check around the cables for the moisture.
Maybe you just need to take it out for a day and drive it like you stole it. A good "stretch day" if it were.
25MPH. That is pretty slow. Hard to get the motor any where near the powerband at that speed.
Since it has not been used to it's fullest I would also take a look at the clutches for wear in the first part of the "Stroke" of both the primary and secondary. Maybe there is a buildup on the shaft from it not fully shifting.
How are the sliders looking?
