Have a friend who just puchased a 2000 sxr500 for his kids. They went on a family ride and it ran out at 70 miles, is this normal??? He checked the main jets and it has already been jetted down one size. The primary clutch has been freshened up. Is this common for this sled?

You can do better,,my wife has a '01 dlx 500(same motor as yours)and we did a 60+ ride last sat. and she used a 1/2 tank, not bad IMO.

lota things come into play when trying to get good MPG, trail conditions
weight of your thumb,gas,sled maintenance,clutching,etc,etc...

i think you need to look into jetting again to start with, run the sled
through each range, low, mid, top end,and do plug checks, plugs will tell
ya what the motor needs, check carbs for stock spec's then you can
see what direction it needs or has been gone in.

then look into clutching, what are your engaging rpm's,what are your
top end rpm's, everything moving freely not binding and in good working
order?

also gearing,is it stock did someone change it?? etc,etc.....

thats 5-6mpg,thats crazy,,yes that sled can do better

Thats good to hear. The carbs are stock other than the mains. I drove one of these sleds about 3 years ago and remember the stock clutching was horrible. I need to get it here and drive it.

I just got back from the gas station with the wifes vmdlx 500
topping it back off from last sat's ride,it calculated out to 10 MPG
and that was bust'en powder 75% of the time!!,,if we would have been on
packed groomed trails it would have done much better,i,'m pleased with
the machine..

so you can do better, just gota get your jetting/clutching dialed in....

Is the secondary clutch not shifting appropriately for the speed she is riding and pulling alot of rpm?

My wife rides a 2000 sxr500 and we put on about 90 miles the other day and she was still splashing on the bottom of the tank when we got home.

You can do better. Maim had an 01 of these that he clutched, put a ripsaw on and such. With his butt 200+ at average trail speed of 60+ mph he would get 7 mpg. Driven respectable it should get over 100 miles to a tank easy.

Bearings all good?(those top 2 little aluminum ones on the cross shaft) Is the track loose or tight? to loose and you ratchet all the time, to tight burn up sliders and get horrid mileage.

Other thing that he also changed was go 1 more tooth on the top gear in the chain case since the sxr's in 01 were geared down one tooth.

something is amiss.

0ur 600 twin gets 10mpg, no better no worse, and that's with my 240lbs, + my gF so maybe close to 400lbs of rider/ passenger weight when you add in riding gear, plus the venture is quite a bit heavier than a SXR 500.

The sled I drove you had to wind the snot out of it to get it moving, then it shifted out too quick in the mid range and fell on it's face. I have a shop and a 30 acre field, just need to drive it. My guess is that it's not shifting at slow trail speed and it's probably reving 7000 all day long.

sxr 500 fuel mileage

Hey my 600 twin; 97 I dropped the needles one notch from stock and went one size down on the main and what a difference; better on oil too. Just keep a little oil in the fuel tank and run with the choke on for a bit when cold. Always keep and eye on your plugs after adjustments

hork you gota get the women her own sled..

she loves driving my XC600sp rack flatslides actually has a little less throttle pull than the 500 EFI. she HATED the 96 XCR - the throttle pull from the triple vm's, and non rack style throttle, and the tq off the bottom end of the xcr was weird to her, maybe the EPI clutch kit didn't suit her. The indy5, she does not mind, but she hates the pink and purple graphics. LOL its moms sled so the color stays, and what's really funny is the GF's favorite color is PINK!!! LOL Maybe I should do what a female coworker of mine did, and have her sled painted PINK. LOL

kirkswim is correct in that i needed to gear up my sxr500. the 2000-01 sxr 500 where geared down 1 tooth compared to all the 97-99 500 twin shorties. it would only hit 80mph before and after clutching it. after i put the gear in, it would break 90mph and the fuel milage improved to what daman and others are getting according to the brother that bought it from me says.

check the primary as there might be some worn parts in there as well.

We get 130 miles per tank every time with our 2000 SX500R. 96 studs, stock track run loose. Secondary wrapped to 90, stock BL-P-BL in primary with stock weights from a 2002 SX600R.

"you must do allot of trail riding??"

Every weekend there is ridable snow were on the trails. Pretty sure 90 is the stock setting for the 2000 SX500R.

I did not see who was riding it while the mileage was so bad.

Kids?

I remember my brother and I got mileage like that on our Phazers. But they spent more time with the ski's pointed down the trail and the track point in another direction spinning like we were dirt track racing. Those were the days. That and gas was $1.10 a gallon.

yup it is but i bet if you backed it off to 80 or 70 for a test it may do better.

Tried those setting also. It's my wife's sled, when she decides she needs more power/speed halfway up a steep hill, this sled will backshift right now with this set up. Even tried a 47/41 helix and she likes the stock helix best. I'd really like it if she would consider a 600 triple as they are better on gas.
