I have a 96 vmax 600 and was wondering what octane gas I need to be running. I have been running 92 or 93 all of the time but some people told me thats not necessary for my sled. What do you guys use?

My '97 600 (With head gasket mod) runs better on a mix of 91 and 87 or just 89. If I use 89 or higher it seems to run better and get better mileage. No sense spending more on gas than necessary.
For the record I got 13 1/2 MPG with it on the same trip I used less gas than my fathers 700 Viper over the same distance. Speeds were in the mid 40's most of the 150 trail miles.

with todays crappy a$$ gas not a bad idea to run better fuel, but stock
you only need 88 or higher(it's right in your owners manual).
my sleds get 89, the muscle sleds 93,94...

i'm going to start running mid grade than also. I have only been getting 5-6 mpg. I am taking my tempa flow off this week and just leaving the stock jetting.

thats exactly where its going. Coming home from St Germain to Rhinelander where our hotel was this weekend i put on 56 miles and put in 9.4 gallons. I'm assuming I have a 10 gallon tank? My gauge was below E for the last 15 miles and I was getting very nervous. A guy that put my new clutch in told me I should be seeing between 9 and 10mpg.

yes 10 gals...
yammies fuel gauges are generous thank god,,when your on E you have
time yet.
try a search on your sled, you should be able to do a little better on fuel with some tuning...

No. In Sweden we have 95 and 98 octane gas at all gas stations, some stations have 96 too. I run mine on 98 since it's bored, ported and piped. Stock I'd run it on 95.

fuzzbutt, and Motorbreath, please remember that the methods of rating octane are much different from US to euro standards.
I am not ceratin exactly what 98 octane in sweden corresponds to here int he states or canada, but I can assure you it is probably the same as our premium octane of 91 or 92 octane. RON is one method and there are at least 1-2 other methods.
kinda like US and imperial gallons are different.
I have friends in sweden on a different forum that have the same bike as I do, and this topic same up seveal times, until we found out that the scales for determining octane were not the same.

That solved the puzzle. Googled a little and it seems that Europe uses Reseach Octane Number (RON) and USA uses Pump Octane Number (PON). (RON + MON)/2 = PON
