I'll try to make this a short as possible. I bought a used SRX and it had a 40T bottom gear on it. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the bottom gear seemed to be out further than the top. I placed a straight edge across the front of the chaincase(cover removed) and the distance from the top gear to the straight edge was greater than the bottom gear to the straight edge. After some help from people on here I determined that the guy must have used a polaris gear which is wider through the spline area. I then went and bought an EPI gear through Royal Distributing and when I looked at it, its the same distance through the spline as the one I took off. They both measure 25mm. 800 told me that the Yamaha gears are only 22.5mm. The EPI gear did come with 3 spacers.
Now I don't know what to do?? Is the EPI gear meant to be used without the stock spacer behind it and use the thinner spacers that came with it or did I get the incorrect gear again? I was hoping to bolt the EPI gear on just like a stock Yamaha gear.

JAY, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE THAT GEAR WITH NO PROBLEM. IF ITS STICKING OUT TO FARR, IT COULD BE ON THERE WITH THE STOCK YAMAHA SHIM. THE EPI GEARS DO COME WITH SPACERS. I HAVE A 21 TOP GEAR THAT HAS SPACER MOLDED TO IT WITH THREE SPACERS IN THE BAG. WHAT YA NEED IS TO FIND SIZE OF THE STOCK YAMAHA BOTTOM SHIM. YOU HAVE THIS ALL APART. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Yeah, its all apart. I have the stock yamaha spacer out as well. The first time I took it apart there was no spacer in there at all and the gear could actually move around on the shaft since it didn't come out past the end of the shaft in order for the bolt and washer to tighten against it. I then went and purchased the spacer but it brought the gear out too far so I concluded that it was the wrong gear. Now the EPI is the same. Should I just use this gear with the spacers that came with it. Maybe the 3 spacers place the gear in the correct location?

YES, DON,T USE THE YAMAHA SPACER WITH EPI GEAR. SHOLDER ON THAT BOTTOM GEAR FACES THE TRACK. YES USE THE SPACERS THAT CAME WITH THAT GEAR. YOUR GONNA HAVE TO DO SOME CHECKING. I WOULD THINK YA NEED THOSE SHIMS TO RUN THAT GEAR. THESE GEARS WORK GREAT, ITS JUST GETTING THEM SET-UP. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Okay, great. I thought they should just bolt on with the stock components. Where is a good place to take measurments from? If I put a straight edge across the face of the chaincase, crossing both gears, should the distance from the gear face to the straight edge be the same for both? Just not sure if the face of the chaincase is square with the gears or if it angles in or out.

I put it back top for you, the gears should be parrallel with the case surface

Yeah, same problem. I went and ordered an EPI gear for an SRX and thought it would be the same as stock but its wider through the spline area. Its 25mm like the polaris gear. I wasn't sure if I got the wrong gear or if that's how EPI made them and I needed the spacers which came with the gear in stead of the stock yamaha spacer. Looks like, if you want to use the EPI gear, you need to remove the stock spacer and replace it with the 3 seperate spacers that come with the gear. How accurate does this have to be? I can get them to be within 1mm but not bang on. I assume that's probably fine. Thanks for the help once again.

Well 1mm is close enough, but I like em straight, next time get the Team gears, they are made for a Yammie and give you the shim to use it in a Polaris. EPI are all Polaris parts

Where do you get Team gears from? Are Micro Belmonts as good as Team's?

I bought a chain as well and it was a Team product. Actually I think it was made by Borg Warner. Just wondering if they are off good quality.
The 1mm difference is bothering me. The spacers seem to be 2mm thick so I'm either 1mm under of 1mm over. What else could I use for a spacer that is that size (ID and OD) but thinner? Are the ones on your secondary clutch the same ID?

You could use the shim behind the secondary but it is 25mm rather than 1" so you need to take .015 with a file. No big deal. The borg chain is a good product. If I were you I would tighten the stock gear and spacer on it and center the drive axle as I told you before, then do your shimming.

The only problem is I don't have a stock gear. I have one fom a Polaris and the EPI which I just bought and thought was the same as a stock one. If I could find a stock yamaha gear for a decent price I'd get one and use that and send the EPI back. In Canada they are around $140.00.

That's OK after I thought about it, just loosen the set screws on the other side before you tighten the bottom gear. If you're aligning your gear offset off the case, and the top gear has the correct spacers behind it, use the top gear as your reference and adjust the bottom to match you'll be all good.

That's good to know. I'll check on some prices for the VMAX parts. Huge price difference in the chains.

Just priced a 38t gear for an SRX in Canada. I think I will stick with the EPI somehow. Its retails for $215.00 plus tax. That's crazy!! $140.00 must be for the top gear.

BECAUSE ITS PART # PER MODEL ALSO THEIR TWO DEFFERENT MODEL SLEDS. THIS IS SOMETHING THATS NEVER MENTIONED HERE WITH ALL THE EXPERTS. VMAX 700 SX GEARS WORK GREAT ON THE SRX. AND WAY CHEAPER. NOW REMEMEBER THOUGH, YOU MUST REPLACE TOP/ BOTTOM AND CHAIN. 3:16 (yammie tony)
