phazer II deep snow project!!

Hi everyboby, i just purchase a 91 phazer II, these machine are so fun to play with!! I'm planing to get this machine into a real deep snow machine. I found that with the 121" * 1/2" paddle i was able to go nearly everywhere, i just want to go a step higher cause it looks like i'm on the first step with this track, is there anybody that can share their succes story with long tracks or maybe short track with 2" paddle. I just not shure witch is the best way to go!!

I was thinking abou doing the same thing for my son, 92 Phazer II
I dont know if it could turn a 2" paddle? I do have a 136 x 1-1/2 I thought would be the ticket. Ours has a single Aaen can pipe, I was also thought about trying the XT front struts?
 
I had a pretty capable 91 back a few years ago. Once I was done building it I don't think I ever had it not go where I pointed it. I used to run some really silly lines with it just to see if I could. This was here in the flatlands - I never got it out west to try it at elevation.

Motor was running about 80hp or so with a 136x1.25" track. Stock drivers. That was as tight a fit as I wanted between the bulkhead and the track. Might have gotten a 1.5 in there but I wouldn't have wanted to put it together.

With 7 tooth drivers I think a 1.75 would fit nicely - maybe a 2" - I don't know on that one though. The problem with going to the 7's is that the bend in the track gets really tight so I stayed with the 8's.
 
I have been searching and playing with a Phazer II also. I am told that 1.25" paddle is as big as you want to go with 8 tooth drivers and no bigger than 1.5" with 7 tooth drivers even though a 1.75" would fit. I think the rotating mass gets to be too much.
 
I'm about 3 hours north of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra. I just picked up a 98 Phazer Mountain Lite which comes stock with a 136X1.25 track in it. After a new Belt and a good carb dismantle-and-doosh* I took it out in about 6-12" of fresh snow starting @5000' and hill climbed the crap out of it to 7500' over and over again. I was running with 2 Mountain Max 700s, one stock 136 track and the other super pumped with a 151 conversion....I'll tell ya what, every time we stopped those guys (...self included...) where laughing our butts off at the Phazer. It climbed like an S.O.B.....I've been told that the 1.25" tread is optimum for this sled versus a change in drivers for larger paddles...though a pipe would have been nice....it was definitely satisfactory. :);D
 
Ok thanks to all for your reply :rofl: , so with my stock 8 tooth sprocket sounds that i cant go any higher than 1.25" track and with the 7 tooth should be too tight to spin (hp rubbing) if i understand maybe somebody could explain why 7 tooth maybe a problem . So if i have a 136" * 1.5" is there a way to put the 7 tooth driver and to gear down the transfer case to compensate or modify the tunnel to give it space to go with 8 tooth. I really want to put a big track on it, we have big mountain and lots of snow overstock, now 3-4 feet of powder before to hit hard old stuff.

if somebody have experience in the same condition with a phazer and telling me that with a 1.25" track was able to work in these condition i'm gonna make it this way!! but i really like to customise my phazer until full satisfaction!!
I'm probably not the first one willing to do such a thing!!

Is there any after market that specialise or have parts for phazer?

Back in the day there were all sorts of companies making mod parts for the mighty phazer. Now your pretty much looking for used stuff. Hartman still does some things and some of the old school engine builders will port them if you want to pay for it. Aaen still sells new pipes for them.

With some motor work and other things they are good for about 80hp or so and be fairly reliable. Biggest problem I had was keeping a recoil in mine as with the compression I was running it like to break the rope and pull the end out of the handle.

If you think you need more track than a 1.25" then look into rolling the chaincase so that you can stay with the 8 tooth drivers. 7's are not the answer IMO.

I have an 89 Phazer with a 136x1.5 that I ride from 5000 ft to 9000 ft elevation with no problems in terms of spinning the track. It has the 8 tooth drivers and about 3/8" of clearance between the paddles and bulkhead, If that is not enough track try a 144x1.5.
 
Maybe we can combine these two posts: Where can I get the drivers (which, please bear with me as I am assuming the drivers are the same as gears); I long-tracked a '96 Phazer (used factory yamaha tunnel ext-128" track maybe), has Aaen pipe, porting, roller secondary, and I lost about 15 mph off the top end (tops around 60-65 when I used to have 80-85 top end).

Buddy suggested gearing down; is this what this post is describing? any help appreciated from fellow TYers; Thanks!
 
Drivers are the big plastic things that turn the track. Gears are the little metal things in the chaincase that turn the shaft that the drivers are on.

How tall of lug track did you put in there. If it required a driver swap that's where your top end went. Count the teeth on the drivers and see if they are 8's (stock) or 7's. Also measure the pitch-space between two track lugs. Then count how many pitches there are and multiply. This will tell you the track length.

Might as well check to see what you have for gearing in the chaincase as well. Pop the cover and count the teeth on both the top and bottom gear.

Once we have all this info - might be able to point you in a direction.
 
One of the reasons that Phazer's are so good in deep snow is because of the lack of front suspension arms dragging through the snow. If you want to improve that more, put struts on from a 94-96 500-600-700. That will raise the belly higher. There have been posts about that here.

Yep; I have seen that post-part of my planned mod as well for a '91 project sled. Search the posts; I think VK540 did the post and the mod on an Exciter-his pics and explanation are GREAT!

Did you have the other modifications already done when you were able to run the higher speed? In other words was the only thing that was changed was the track when you lost speed?
Has the clutch been recalibrated for the mods?
 
Correct; it was piped, clutched and ported as a standard length '96 Phazer II; then we long-tracked it and did nothing else. I am assuming it is a gearing and/or driver issue.
 
If nothing else was changed, the only thing I can think of is if the track is too tight.
 
WPS (Western power sports)has all kinds of track extention and tunnel/skid mod parts for phazers. You have ordrer through a dealer though. Ive got an 86 with a 136x1" and it does great in the deep. Im gonna lower the rear skid a few inches this weekend.
