OK I know I have a really odd setup that I call "MUTT" heres whats done to it then we will go onto the problems:its a 99 SRX chassis
600 bender race prepped case
Stock 700 cylinders and heads
Bender one off pipes into individual mufflers
Bender stock bored carbs 42mm-44mm(its been a long time so unsure)
Completely gutted airbox with hood mod
Arctic cat jackshaft with arctic roller 2ndary
Polaris clutch

Thats the necessary stuff
A little background this sled used to be my Ice oval enduro sled for the Soo I-500 and MIRA oval enduro's which had a 600 mod motor when we went to the RX1 this was retired and sat until 3 years ago I decided to make it my trail sled thus the 700 cylinders.

I was running it this past weekend in a field to feel everything out to try to get my main jets right because it was wayyyyy rich with (pto=160, 165, mag=170) so I got some jets and went to pto=155,155, mag=157.5 and it was running a lot better still a touch blurbley coming out of a turn but alot better and as I was sitting idleing watching my VDO recall of a couple WOT runs the thing basically flooded itself after about 90 seconds at idle. So I took th carbs off and adjusted the float level to lower it in the float bowls. and I tried to fire it to no avail.

Where do i go from here I am about fed up with this thing after 3 long years of tracking things down and I dont know what to do.

Please help or point me in the right direction

Thanks

Bill

I would but I have less than $500 into this setup and with the unpredictable weather and job schedule and amount of time to ride for what i got into it. it would be a great sled if I can get it right for what I am looking to do

Any help is appreciated or if in West MI ill buy food and drink to come over and help me get this thing running

Try the needles. do you know how to read piston wash or plugs at idle/1/4 throttle/1/2 throttle & full throttle to see what part of your jetting needs help? Maybe buy a set of egt,s to dial in franknsled?

I would take a good look at the the carb set up like Turk said. While you have the carbs off, maybe take a look at the reed cages.

Is it all three cylinders loading up or just one.

I havent had time to look farther into it how would i tell if its all 3 or one or the other

Turk:Yes I do with my little piston light and the plugs are still soaked across the board at the 155 155 157.5 setup but I only had 1-2 miles in the field when I stopped to check the rpms which were 9050 before we changed jets and after the jets its now 9375-9450 and we figure we have to get it to 9500-9600 for this pipe setup to work where it should as when we had the pipes on the 600 14.5 compression motor on 114 torco fuel wound up to 10200-10500.

I understand its a frankensled and all and there will be problems but its been nothing but headaches for 3 years and when I finally get it done and running then problem after problem especially being I had a date set with my buddies and dad to makes its maiden 35 mile voyage tonite but thats probaly not going to happen.

Wheres the first place to start if it was idleing fine for about 2 minutes then all of a sudden flooded out it sounded just like when you turn the choke on, on a warmed up running sled type sound and situation
Thanks for the help lets get this figured out and like I said if anyone in the area wants to come help Im up for it as my dad who is very very knowledgable with sleds is out riding around which I dont blame him for right now but kinda sucks when/ if my bros(21 yrs old lazy as hell) sled is down it gets fixed right away where as Im over there thrashing to get mine done like I am a ghost in the garage, I guess its bc its a yammi and not a cat like they have I am the red-headed step-child I guess :offtopic:

Now that some funny shit right there. Not tring to poke fun but...... It seems to me the jetting and clutching are way off because it was tuned for race fuel years ago. You don't seem - up to the task of jetting and clutching from the sounds of your questions. If your looking for the group to suggest jetting I can tell you it very difficult to guide some one though this if they don't have the proper backround and experiance. It a slow process jetting all four fuel circuits and is time consuming. Do you have a local shop or dealer who can do your tuning for you. I know it might be costly but if not done correct its only gona blow up in the near future. Many towns have a shop who does repairs but is not a dealer and could tune this sled but not nessessarily charge you $75 per hour. Good luck.

well if it's loading up at idle look at your pilots(sounds rich) make sure your enrichening circuts are not adjusted tight and leaking fuel by.Like it has been stated ,start with one circut at a time ..(If your not into tuning ,go in to the class. here or Ebay and try to find as many stock parts as you can....as far as your old man goes, You are gonna get way smarter than your brother with tuning(Maybe your old man wants you to learn!)

See thats the thing I tuned and was in charge of how i wanted to have this sled setup when I raced it for J&M racing when I finished 8th at the Soo my first year there, It was already built and we were not going to race it but I said I would take it so I could get in the race for experience, and was told if you set it up you can ride it so I went out to our practice lake and spent a full weekend settig up the front end and jetting and what not, I am just 6 years removed from that experience and was curious if anyone here could help me with a starting point because due to work and other "life" things I dont have a full weekend to do this I have maybe 2-3 hours per week :o|
to dedicate to this so i was hoping for a starting baseline and go from there is all, but if no help I guess I will go at it again on my own

As for the old man he knows I can tune this thing and the reason I think he doesnt help is bc him and my mom are in the middle of getting divorced but they still live together #$%&* dont get me started there and he thinks Ive taken her side whereas my bros is on his side, when actually I could give a shit less what they do just get it over with

Clutching wise I have the starting baseline for this thing with the weights and and spring I have in it if this thing revs to 9500rpm the sled has about 155hp which by the mods I was guesstimating it had and clutching wise this thing flies and backshifts great Its all in the fueling getting it cleaned up down low and not flooding itself at idle.

Im not saying I am an expert with sleds but I have over 10 years(since i was 15) dealing and setting up oval race stuff and doing work for friends etc out of my shop for fun, i am a gear head so I believe I have the experience to do this just hoping for a baseline to help get me started is all with main jets and pilots to start with

Sorry for the rant but I dont like being backed into a corner with my background in sleds

how about lets not throw a perfectly good srx off a cliff, rather would see a polaris go cliff diving. still.... FRONT ROW

start with the fundementals ,it's loading up at idle work with your pilots.(make sure your enrichening circut is adjusted correctly))

I ran 155s on a 700 red head with bender pipes and a tempa flow with a gutted air box. I doubt its the mains causing the problems. Then again I was only spinnng it at 8600.

Do some reading in the tech section on here. There is alot of great information on jetting and clutching. Take your time and keep a good log of what you are doing. It takes a lot of time to dial in mods. I don't even know how many hours I have into tuning (Hundreds I am sure). I am sure my wife could tell ya. If your expecting to do do 10 changes at the same time and have everything work out, you're dreaming.
If you have a shop/garage near a good open field or road that you can test on, you're half way there.
The other half is time.
Make one change at a time, write it down and the effect it had.

Lets see if i have this right you have a ported 600 case and have put on a stock 700 top end but still have 42 or 44 carbs and you want to trail ride with this setup?

Actually yes I am because the srx only came in a 600 in 98 and for our race class only 600 could be used so for future years after we got 700 srx'x from yamaha and took the case and crank from 700 motors which are the SAME and put new 600 cylinders and heads on them so I should edit my first post and make it a 700 race prepped case becasue actually thats what it is.

Well all I can say is start with your idle circuit and lean it out......Watching really close so you don't burn it down. I have to agree with the posts above...your going to have to spend some time tuning. If it was a stock sled someone could give you a baseline but your really far from stock. I would also put the airbox back to stock. After that go to the middle circuit and finally the main circuit. Don't even get into clutching that thing until the plugs look right or your just going to be reclutching it!!!! Oh and I am going to have a beer too...LOL...(I don't have popcorn in the house:) )
