Took my 96 vmax today after clean carbs and installing a new air filter to see if I could fix my mpgs and midrange from 4 ths to 5 ths rpms. The sled ran like crap and I only got a little over 4 mpgs. My son has the same sled and he got 10 mpg. So I took my carbs apart and his to see the difference. His pilot screw was set at 3/4 out which mine was at 2. His float was also different.His tab was bent down about an 1/8 of in inch and my tab was level with the float. I took my cabs and set them to his to see how it will run. Could you guys tell me if the TORS could cause the problem? Again it runs the worst between 4 and 5 thousand rpms.

Took the sled out and ran 20 miles and ended up putting in 3.1 gallons and the mid range was still poor. It is only at 4 to 5 ths rpms. I changed my pilot screw and my float height to see if it would change anything. I got better mpg today because i ran above 5000 rpms. I come to the conclusion that it is not the carbs. Can you guys give me an idea where to start.I unhooked the tors and there was no change. Could the clutches cause this problem. I know when i punch the gas it will bog a little and the engine sounds like crap till 6000 rpms. Above 6 the sled goes with great throttle response. When I bought the sled it had a new 108 EXP comet clutch and the primary has a green spring.Any help?

did you try clip pos. 1 on your needles??

Did not change the clip postion. What I did was set my carb to my sons Pilot 3/4 turn for 2 and changed te float height. There was no change in the mid range. I just came in from outside and said to myself that I have to put my sons carbs on and see what happens. Dont you think something would have changed with the pilot and float change.

Just finished the switch and will try to get out and test it. No sure on the gearing. How can I tell the gearing to see if they are the same? Daman could it be my reeds or would it do it all the time?

I don't think so,my srx had bad reeds(wasn't sealing good) when i brought it
home and it seemed to run fine.
the gearing you'll have to pull appart the chain cases and read the stamping
on the gears,a PITA i know but gives ya a chance to do an oil change..

1 other question before i go. I told you I changed my pilot screw from 2 turns to 3/4 turn and changed my float height to see if I could get better fuel mileage. Do think that is safe to run that way. My sons sled is set that way and we put about 400 miles on it this year with no problems. I did some plug checks today when i went out and took pics but they were out of focus. They look a little wet but they were not black and oily.Thanks for the help

stock on your XT's is 1 1/8 out so you went leaner for sure if you don't
have a off idle bogg or back fire your ok.
like i've always told ya read your plugs,they'll tell ya what your motor needs!!

Daman I forgot to tell you one thing. When i changed the carbs yesterday afternoon I noticed that my sled has a lot of oil or oil and fuel coming from the exhaust side of the engine. My belly pan is covered in oil and also my exhaust ports and y pipe. I have a new donut and I sealed the y pipe to the engine with a new gasket. I asume that is unburned fuel. My sons sled has some but nothing compared to mine. Your thoughts. I am going to try my sled tonight when i get home if i have time.

Is it coming from the manifold to exhaust pipe joint??
yea it's probably oily residue from your overly rich mixture...find out exactly where it's coming from and seal it..

Make sure your choke cables did not get switched from one carb to another,they will not work that way, one will be on and you cant see it.

Just came back from 34 miles with switched carbs. My sled with my sons carbs got 8.10 mpg and my son got 6.80mpg. Now i know it is in the carbs even though I still had my mid range problem at 5 to 6 rpms. What inside the carbs would cause him to use 1 gallon more than me in 34 miles. My sons carbs on my sled are all stock with needle at 2 and pilot screw at 3/4 turn and the float tab bent down just a little. My carbs on his sled same thing but needle set at 1.5. I took spark plug pictures and will post them. Had trouble with camera again.

The clutch engament is around 3500 and at wide open about 7000.

Those pics are with my sons carbs witch the needle is at 2. Should i try and drop it to 1.5 and see what happens. Also daman what do you think about my carbs on my sons sled? What should I change in the carbs. Do you think I should just rebuild everything inside you try and buy used carbs?

where are you again on jetting..lets stick to yours for right now..i think you
said your leaner on the mains from stock?.
