I have recently heard of problems with the middle crank bearing seizing on vipers. Just wanted to know if anyone has run into this and if there is any way to prevent it. I have an 02 viper and did not know if any years are more prone to this problem than any other.

I never heard that it was a common problem, but mine went the other day. Sled has 3500miles.

they seemed very lean from the factory...

My sled only has 2200 mi. so hopefully I have a long way to go before I have an issue.

When you're summerizing the sled make sure you spray some fogging oil down the airbox into the carbs with the motor running. It will keep the bearings lubed over the summer, not a bad idea to hold the oil pump open a little bit too so that you feed the motor a little more oil before you put it to sleep for the summer. Don't start the sled until it's time to ride it and put new plugs in it next year.

my buddies center lower rod bearing let go last year, w/like 5400 miles on it. i adjusted my oil pump cable's freeplay to be .76". the tightest that yamaha says. I don't foul plugs and the oil consumption still seems to be light. it have like 3900 miles on mine, and so far all is well. lets hope nothing goes wrong for a long time.

daman, you said richen it up a bit...like 40:1 or 45:1. what does the oil pump @ when at the middle (.807" + or -.039") of what yamaha suggests? right now mine is @ .76" and my buddies is like .77"-.78". i think i'm going to richen the both of them up to .75".

is that what they usually do when they "fog" the motor? is put some of it down the air box? also put some of it in the top of each cyl???
just want to make sure my dealer does all this...
whats all involved in summerizing?
i kno the track has to be loosened, i'll keep the rear end propped up 4 the season, the gas will be stabilized, and i'll take my belt off and my spare belt off and keep them in the house, my sled will be kept in a nice garage....
and fogging.... there are 3 slots in the air box under that foam cover,,,, with the engine running spray (how much?) some into each slot? each slot is for one carb???
i want to summerize and winterize the proper way this year, seeing as in i have a nice sled that i love.....
old phazer i used to have, i just stabilized the gas and took the belt off. and routine maint. every year...

i calculate my oil and gas usage and try to get a 45-50:1 overall on mine.
