Before I dig into this problem tell me what you guys think? The dash and head light have gottem very dimm on my viper? when on the breaks it nearly blacks out the dash. Where should I start?
Try a search on this topic...wire rub @ hood/bulkhead joint, look @ plug contacts at relays above lt foot, rub under seat/tank, rotten tail lamp socket, loose connection at pod...just a few things to try...good luck & post results...cheers

There is another topic in this section about this same problem, it is on around page 5 or 6 of this section (last time i looked). My sled started doing it this year, same symptoms. Dash shuts off when brake is used, and also when switching from high/low beam, headlights are dim.
Around 6-7 other people jumped in and said they also had the same problem. Symptoms are exactly like a harness rub through. I went through my harness under the motor and gas tank, also steering column, found nothing wrong. Several others also found nothing wrong. One guy did find it was the harness under the motor and it cured his problem. ALL the rest ended up being the stator. It gets weak, and apparently can't handle the extra load from the brake lights when demanded. I rode mine a second time after it initially happened and the hand/thumb warmers also quit working. When I had the hand warmers on, the sled ran horrible in the mid range. Turn them off, sled ran fine. I later read a post by Mrviper that the cdi is on the same circuit as the warmers, which I think explains the poor running with the warmers on. Stator can't support the demand, and caused the cdi to not function correctly. Sorry about typing all of this, just trying to give you some background. I haven't proven yet that a stator will cure mine, but it has on several others. I have a stator on order right now.
I would check the harness under the motor and tank, but I'll bet it ends up being your stator. The local dealer quoted me $200 for it. You also need a fly-wheel puller to change it out. I told the dealer to order me one, but he was nice enough to offer to loan me his. Good luck, I have spent a lot of time searching/checking wiring to try to fix this, hopefully the stator will solve it.

Thanks for the tip. This is an 04 viper-s. I thought they beefed up the insulation on this year. I know the earlier models have had this problem. In fact I have a couple of buddies (02 viper, srx) have gone through this. It doesn't act the same as the wiring harness. I sure hope it is not the stator or cdi. I think I will start with removing the helmet shield wiring and see if it goes away. Does anyone know if there is away to check the stator with a multimeter for correct output?

Do a stator check...

Try doing a search, I don't know what it's suppose to ohm out at but I'll bet it's here somewhere.

I'll bet it's your stator also.Mine did the same thing three years ago.
I just soldered a new lead wire that was burn't at the stator.
Just cost my time.
Still good after a couple thousand miles.
I believe I did an OHM check at the plug in to diagnose this.

I had an 04 Viper S with similar issues and it was the stator. I looked for chafed / worn wiring first and when I found none, I replaced the stator. Issues gone. My old stator ohm tested to factory specs.

if you need a stator i got one form an 02. not sure if it's the same as an 04 but it's yours for $75 shipped if you need it
