Have any of you guys just removed the oil pump and the oil tank from a Viper? Pre-mixing the fuel and oil to 40:1 is quick and easy. Eliminates the wondering if the oil pump is putting out the correct ratio at top end and other ranges. I did this years back with a PWC with no problems. Have a few Cat friends that do this currently and swear by it. Anyone done this??

It can be done sure,,but what a PITA pre-mixing on the trail all the time,
yamaha pumps are very dependable..and not hard to dial in..

I am glad you spoke up. My Viper sized a crank rod 2-3-08 now waiting for a new stater. How much oil are you using per tank? I have a 700 mm and it consumes much more than my Viper. All of my Viper friends say the same thing a Viper just does not use much oil. Other than pining the gas on the day she blew I have found no real reason for the failed bearing. Carbs were clean and it did use oil that day. P.S. I am great full for all of the tips I have been getting lately, thanks.

Vipers from the factory IMO were set to lean,on a viper i would shoot
for 45-50:1(31-32ish oz's)per tank.

have you ever checked what your cable is set too??

Sorry for the late reply, I have been building the motor and doing the install. Cable is set to factory spec's but I plan to decrease the cable distance so that it pulls sooner. Should give additional oil. Now using Amsoil synethic oil. I agree they are set too lean.

Anyone know how much you can increase over factory specs. on cable length?
Matter of fact i do...

adjusted a members Viper this fall to 20mm and he said he used 1 1/4 qt
to 12 gals(tank full) thats a 34.3:1 ratio, to much, so i'd say to start
at 22-23mm and do your calculation's, try to shoot for a 45ish to 1
over all usage.

Unless your using Yamalube then keep it pig rich, but guy's that run a good
full synthetic @ $30 a gal want to try to get it spot on...

Doesn't sound right,20mm is factory spec.
Don't know why he used that much oil,I know mine isn't
using that much oil.
Think I'll start at 19 to be safe and monitor the
consumption.
Personally,I prefer Opti 11 oil.Pv stay cleaner than Yamilube.
Thanks for the input.

I'm not shure about Viper bottom end but in SRX the oilpump also lubes the crank bearings..

Yes, you still need to lube the crank. Eliminating the oil pump is done mostly for racing applications. For non-racing applications I recommend keeping the oil pump. They are very reliable, and they adjust the mixture relative to throttle position.

I am convinced that in reality very few engine problems are actually caused by the oil pump failing. Many failures are falsely attributed to the oil pump. Crud in the oil, air bubbles from letting it run too low, adjustment, can all be contributing factors.

If you are set on not having the oil pump mix oil with the fuel, then you can plug off the lines to the fuel pump, or route them back to the tank. Again, you still need the tank and pump to keep the bottom end lubed.

You also may want to look into what guys with big bores do for oil mixture.
