Hard starting 98mm

I have a 98mm that is hard to start period but even after it is warm it takes 5 or 6 pulls i have raplaced the stator and the cdi box with good parts off of another sled any help would be appreciated. Thanks Dan
 
I have a 98 MM (wife's sled) and it isn't too hard to get it to start. Problem is keeping it running. I have to run it on half choke for a few miles until everything warms up, otherwise it wants to die when you come to idle. After it's warm, it runs great and starts on the first or second pull. If I let it sit for an hour or two, it's back to running on half choke for those first few miles.
 
try checking your compression, if its low or much of a difference from cylinder to cylinder it could cause it to be hard starting. More than a 5-10 psi difference is bad or if your compression is below 100 to 110psi itll start getting hard to start both hot and cold. I think most yamie 2strokes that i have dealt with should be around 110-120psi when there in good shape. Its important to use a quality compression tester and a good procedure when checking compression.
 
Have you cleaned the carbs? also, have you cleaned the smart carb port that some guys with smart carbs mention?


It may possibly be the smart carb just making it hard to start. Every once in a while our 97 venture 600 (which is essentially a MM with a 2 up seat) takes quite a few cranks to get it running, even after it is warm. I had the carbs thorughly cleaned/ soaked this winter, and it still happens, and we have 125 psi per cylinder on ours, even with 6000miles on it. For us it is not much of an issue due to Electric start. I do have to flip the choke for a little bit (a few seconds) after it starts as well.
