Smart cabs are fail safe. If there are issues they fail rich. Just look at the stock jetting for these. They are designed to lean the ciruits (1 high solenoid and 1 low solenoid)out based on temp and barometric pressure. If the ports are plugged it will not lean the mixture. I have done a lot of testing with these carbs as I have a set on my wifes 97MM600. There a a couple cheats if a guy is looking to bypass them or test them.

yes, they definitely fail safe, not lean.
I suspect you had a case seal go, even if it wasn't a case seal, it would be smart to replace the seals if you intend on keeping the MM for a while.

I finally have some time tomorrow to take a look at the carbs and I guess pull the case. Do I need to mark the crank before I take it out or anything? Does it need to be rebalanced if I do not find anything wrong down there?
The manual does not say anything on this.
