Could anyone tell me what would cause my belt to wear so fast? My sons 96 vmax xt had a new belt on it at the begining of this year and now it is to the point where I have to replace it. We put on about 500 miles this year. When you open the hood the carbs have a ton of belt dust all over them.

How did that belt sit on the secondary when it was new? it should sit about 1/16' below the top or close to flush. If its up to high it will be too tight. If the clutches are not aligned properly it will cause the sides to wear out and take out our belt. The belt should be good for a lot longer.

When I put the belt on I made sure it was 1/16th below the top. Should I check center to center and offset? If the clutches are worn would that cause wear?

Not sure i never really checked them. When I switched out the carbs I looked at my sons carbs there was belt dust all over the side of his carb. Then last Saturday he could only get it up to 70mph. I am asuming that would kill your gas mileage having a worn belt. So when I came home i measured his belt and it is at 1-5/16.

I've been told that Belt should sit flush to just above the secondary.... now i hear it should sit just below it? mine is pretty much even to just above the secondary....

all depends on which belt you use. If I use an 8dn , it sits just above my sec. if I use an 8ch it sits just below . the 8dn is a thicker belt than an 8ch (for an example) and its a lil longer. but it also runs hotter than the softer 8ch belt! you obviously use a different belt for the 2 cylinder, but the example is the same. I always had good luck with the 89L in the 600 models

Just for inputs sake- I am using an Ultimax 3 belt on my '95 600, it sits about 1/16th below the secondary and I have put about 2500 miles on it and it still has a lot of life left in it.

My 89L's last for ever with measurements correct and at or just below the top of the secondary. I imaging my belt would last longer if the primary sheave was smooth as it was when it was new but with 8000+ miles on it there is a bit of grooving at the bottom. Runs fine though. Even at a 5 MPH creep.
