Yeah..holding the brake will help, but if you already took your chain off,put it back on and it will also help the shaft not to turn since it has been wrapped around the bottom gear to.Usually I loosen both nuts top and bottom, remove them, release tension by backing off adjuster and pull both gears of with the chain at the same time, and do it the same way when you put it all back.SIMPLE AS THAT!!!!

Thanks for all the replys...I didn't remove the chain but I did remove the adjuster....I tried doing it with the parking brake on and had a buddy hold onto the secondary...as soon as I tried to turn the nut the whole sled would move! I know this is a simple question but I'm assuming that the nut is right-hand threaded?
Also, I've had the bottom gear out before no problem but this is the first time I've atempted to remove the top one.

I just finished the job.....all I actually did was hold onto the brake lever with one hand and I used a 3/4 inch drive scoket in the other and....
But now-----> I have everything re-assembled, and when I went for a ride around the yard I'm hearing some grinding noises fom the chaincase. It is especially noticeable when its in reverse....I'm sure everything is put together correctly, does anyone know what could be causing the grinding noise?
There's also plenty of tension on the chain.

Silly question but did you re-adjust the chain tension?

Did you make sure that you installed the collar behind the gears there is one for each gear dont know if that would cause your noise but you would have play in the gears without those collars and maybee chain alignment may be off without them.

That may be your problem...too tight.

I'll try backing off the tension a little more later on this evening....not sure if it will work tho as I already had it farly lose before I tightened it up the second time
