Hot Grip Removal Tricks???

Has anyone ever removed the heated handle bar grips successfully?

Knowing they are installed with the Yamabond & used in a heated application, I am guessing that they are almost impossible to save when removing?? :o|

Am changing a set of handle bars & the throttle unit does not "split apart"
as the brake unit does, so the way I see it the grip has to be removed to slide the throttle assembly off of the bars.

Any ideas out there???

Or, just "cut it off" & destroy it?? : #$%&*

the factory yamaha ones sometimes have rivets or you can get some that fasten with sheet metal screws.
 
I removed factory grips from a 2000 sx500r. Drilled out the rivet and they slid right off with out too much trouble. Installed new hot grip brand grips, used JB Weld, noticed the next morning the throttle grip wire was hitting the throttle lever, it would not allow full throttle, so I heated the grip with a heat gun and was able to turn it enough to clear the wire.

Heaters are under the rubber grips. If you use a knife an go through the rubber even slightly you'll cut the ultra thin foil circuit. So if you are removing them permanently only cut deep enought to start separating the rubber and foil should stay behind on the bar.

Heating as suggest may help. My grips don't have rivets from what I have seen but the heaters are likely a common concern. They work extremely well so I would not want to have to replace them with something else.
 
Connect the grips one at at time to a 12 volt battery. When they get hot, twist and slide them off. Or use the heat gun method mentioned.
 
Just did a set off a 07 attack, tried the air trick, It did not work, hooking the warmer to a 12V battery and some serious twisting broke the glue loose and came off perfect!! no damage to warmers................thanks for the advice guys ;)!
