Hi guys,
I have a 2001 Yamaha SRX with about 7000 miles on it. I like the sled and want to continue riding it but feel it may be time for some clutch and shock maintenance. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations. where is a good place to have the shocks rebuilt? Should I replace the weights and springs in my clutch? (I also wouldn't mind getting a little more top end if it's not too complicated)
Thanks for your help.

At 7000 miles i would inspect clutching for wore out parts AND do a top end on the motor if it's never been done...

I would do what daman said and I would go through the skid and do bearings that needed to be done and bushings and check for w arm problems. I would also check the front suspension bushings. I personally wouldn't have the shock rebuilt unless there is a problem with them...call me cheap!!

My 98 has 11,000 on it, and still runs great. Gotta watch that w-arm, I'm sure its cracked. Mines been welded and braced.

Thanks guys...You are right, the W arm is cracked.
Any advice regarding the clutches? I have 7000 mi on the sled and they have never been touched.

Daman,
My 2000 SRX has 11K miles, the engine has never been opened. When you recommend a rebuild of the top end of the motor, do you mean just replacing the rings or replacing the pistons, rings, clips and wrist pin? The only oil I've used since I bought it new has been Amsoil synthetic. I am going to go completely through the sled during the crappy warm weather. Man, i love this sled, should have bought 2!!! Thanks!!

anyway yea a top end would be rings, pistons IF they mic out under spec,
wrist pin/bearing's,,also you should split the case and check crank/bearings
and new seals,etc,etc...sounds like you know what to do,,good luck take
your time and have fun with it since ya cant ride it...lol

On these higher mileage engines, should we be replacing the reeds? I have to think they wear out also with mileage. If they should be replaced, it there a significant performance advantage of aftermarket reeds such as V-Force or Boysen? Thanks!

Yup reeds would be another thing to replace,i know when i brought my srx
home and went through it the reeds were not sealing right and that has allot less miles then yours, yes good idea...
and on a stock motor yamaha reeds are about as good as it gets, save your money and focus on clutching, you'll get allot more outa clutching then you would with AM reeds...
Oh and stick with OEM parts too....

I have 7000 on my 01 srx and I am going to do the topend this summer, plan on mrviper700 porting it while it's apart. My primary clutch needs a rebuild also, I would say that EVERY srx with 7000 needs a clutch rebuild, that bushing between the sheaves is always the first to go. I tried to talk myself into the "fourstroke jump" instead of throwing $1200 at my sled, I just love the ol' girl too much!

I hear that...SRX M10 said:I tried to talk myself into the "fourstroke jump" instead of throwing $1200 at my sled, I just love the ol' girl too much!
When you yank out the skid for an overhaul I'd be willing to bet that the bushings for the W arm pivots are beyond shot as they don't usually last all that long without regular greasing which requires the Warm to be taken off and the collars and bushings packed with grease the best you can. These bushings are in the 2 L shaped brackets bolted to the rails and the best way to reduce the wear of them is to drill and tap a hole for a grease fitting in such a way that it would shoot grease into them.Worked for me.
Not to contradict anyone here but as far as doing the top end you might want to do a compression test as well as a leak down test to determine whether you need to replace the components yet or not.The Amsoil should have given you quite a bit better wear protection so the rebuild may not be all that necessary yet.Of course new pistons and rings is never a bad thing.
