Hey guys - just picked up a new commuter bike - anyone know anything about these??

Need to know what grade oil to run in it for now.

What ever oil you use make sure its for a 4 stroke motorcycle and not regular automotive engine oil. Automotive oil has additives that will harm your clutch pack.

Thanks rich / daman - I found it under the seat when I took it off. 10w30, 10w40, 20w40 or 20w50 all work. I'm guessing I'll try some 10w40 to start and switch up to heavier oil as the heat increases this summer.

I haven't had a bike for 4 years, I'm pretty fired up! woo hoo!!! ;)!
 
Use anything you want as long as it doesnt say "Energy Conserving" anywhere on the bottle, the energy conserving means it has friction modifiers which will make the clutch slip. I have used Mobile1 15-50 for a long time, works great. Another common oil sportbike guys use is Shell Rotella 15-40, made for diesles but works great in bikes.

Since this zx6 is a wet clutch bike, yes, make sure to not run any oil that says "energy conserving" in the round label on the back of the oil. Most auto oils have this designation, and it will ruin your wet clutch. Now if you happen to have a dry clutched ducati, you can use energy conserving oil. You really are best off sticking to a bike specific oil, but say you were out riding somewhere and needed oil, anything close to 10-40 that did not have the energy conserving label would get you home with no harm done to the motor or clutch.

I have been using Silkolene in my bikes for years, and I really like the stuff, but I know many that have used amsoil with no issues in a lot of miles.

Those are nice good running bikes, have fun on it. Heck, I almost had one as a my first street only bike, but ended up getting a sweet deal on a KZ1000.


edit, CACSRX beat me to the energy conserving part. But it is that important.
 
Thanks again everyone. Not my first bike, so I know about the oil (1st was a 1974 Yamaha GT80!!) but I'm sure I'll have fun on it!

That's a D model correct- or is it an E? Either way they make a pretty sweet sport tourer, and a good all around bike.
I was thinking you got one of the original ninja 600R's. The one you got is a nice step up from those.
 
Yep - D model. I put about 4 miles on it today - and changed the oil. A little chilly, but it was still fun! :)

It's a pretty smooth bike considering its age. And still fairly comfortable!
