I just bought a real nice 2001 SRX and have discovered I have to pull it over several times in order to start a warm engine. More even with it being cold . What should I be expecting ? My old Exciter and Phazer was 1st pull when warm , 3 when cold . I think the guy I bought it from said the air box is modified , but other than that it is stock . Any thoughts would be appreciated.

ok , so I might have an issue , ...the sled hasnt really been run for a short time . I have put high octane in it and part of the time it seems better, just not always . I am averaging 12.5 MPG . I think thats pretty good . Just always been used to 1st pull and go and Yamaha has always been great for that .

How old are the plugs? could be something very simple, I get better fuel milage than that. I rode today with a bunch of guys and I got nearly as good MPG as my buddy with an RX1

good point , I will have to check the plugs , I thought they were new , but maybe not . I thought 12.5 was good . However , I was riding in very slushy conditions , track was spinning alot . I makes me feel good to know that It might get as good as an RX1 , ha thats really funny ..good

are you cracking the throttle at all when you are trying to start it warm?? any i know just need the throttle cracked.. when doin a warm start.. .as for cold mine is 3-4 pulls full choke... then as soon as it starts let up on the choke and apply as nessicary

interesting , I never done that before , I will try it and see . thanks for the input .

as a side note , Have anyone noticed a vibration in the handle bars on the srx , I noticed it and wondering if thats normal or do you think something else is occuring

My 98 700 starts on one pull if it sits 1.5 hours. Less than that I have to just crack throttle. My 95 600 starts on one pull every time.

all depends if it is 0 or -20 outside. If your sled is inside a cold storage or a heated storage. My 2001 SXR always starts within 3 pulls,SRX takes a few more pulls to start. But when engine is warm,a little throttle and 1 pull works for me.

Well that seems to be the things to do , given it a little trottle , Once thing is for sure this sled really is fast and fun to ride . I am very happy with my purchase
thanks..

are you aware of or know about the power valve cleaning? I know this has nothing to do with your starting issues, but it is still something to be aware of and stay on top of for maintenance. did the guy before you ever clean and re-adjust them? great job on the '01 srx purchase. those are my favorite and I want to get one. i'm so jealous.

The guy I bought it from was a racer , I think he said he had like 6 sleds , the SRX he sold to me wasnt raced , but was going to be converted. It is stock , He seemed to be very Knowledgeable, about the SRX , he did mention taking the power valves out to be cleaned . He recommends Yamaha lube only to minimize carbon.

Did you buy it from the Yamaha guy in Weare? I think his name is John? He's supposed to know his stuff when it comes to Yamaha.

My 98 used to be about 10-50 pulls when Ice cold. And 3-5 when warm. After I cleaned the carbs, Like clean with a tooth brush and q-tip clean! Its starts 2-3 ice cold, and .25 when warm, lol.

Crack the throttle and give it a pull! It will start just fine.
Side note for you though, higher fuel octane will make it harder to start. Run the correct octane level required for your sled.

Two observations - the 01's had a recall on a relay switch in the headlight circuit that made them hard to start or would start and quit - secondly you mentioned putting "high octane" fuel in it - too much octane will make them hard to start also - just my 2 cents!!! ;)!

huh , I would have thought higher octane would make it start easier, good info!... I was also unaware of the recall. I will have to investigate to see if it was done . It is my understanding Yamaha recommends 93 octane , is this true ? ....nice motor pic Yammiman
