poolaris and blue smoke

So just a quick question, my buddy was out riding his 2005 800 RMK on Saturday. Mostly ripping around on a lake, jumping drifts along shore all day long. He said it ran great until the very last time he started it, at which point it started blowing blue smoke and missing on one cylinder. Any ideas what the problem might be?
 
I mentioned both of those suggestions to him, and he did state the smoke was blue in color. I remember when my wifes 'Exploder', I mean Explorer took a turn for the worse, the block cracked and started spurting out blue smoke. He didn't think to look at the coolant, he put it away in friend's garage where he was riding, then went back home to Minnesota. Said he would check it when he came back thru Michigan to visit his folks for Easter.

um its a polaris... that's a problem, lol! seriously though sounds like a powervalve issue. He better make sure it was white smoke though.
 
there is nothing wrong with polaris sleds. I know you were kidding but this really sounds like my 2000 VES 600 when the valves get plugged up. It almost never happens since switching to amsoil from the even more expensive VES specific polaris oil.


At the end of this season, which was last week, I had a little VES stickage on the mighty xc. oh well, I will clean them in fall, and it will be set to ride again in winter.

what oil was he using? Polaris valves seem to be the easiest to get clogged IME, that is until they went to the self cleaning ones.

For the last 2 years he has been using Yamalube 2S.

I bet that is the issue then. It is easy to check, pull out ont he plunger once the top is off and see if it pulls back in easily and by itself. Do this on both sides.

yamalube is the same as the Arctic blue I use in all of our sleds, but the XC with VES. I would use the "yamalube" over nothing, or some no name brand, but I would expect a valve sticking issue if used for much more than a few hundred miles.


Shortstop, I thought the newer ones had "self cleaning" valves? or was it just leaning up on the oil allowing them to not gunk up quickly.

I agree...it will always come back to old fashion removal and manual cleaning.
 
Just learned the REAL reason why he had the blue smoke coming from his sled. He unknowingly put DIESEL into it!!! Our other buddy that he was with grabbed a red can from his dad's garage that weekend for backup fuel, the garage where they store their old tractor. Well, our other buddy's dad uses whatever cans he has laying around for diesel fuel, I guess he doesn't believe in buying yellow cans or at least labeling them. Our other buddy went into town with this 5 gallon can, 1/2 full of diesel and topped it off with regular gas. My friend with the RMK used this mixed can to top off his sled, probably put in 2 or 3 gallons of diesel/regular mix. What a nightmare, eh? Now he's wondering if his sled is f'd or what, what do you guys think? What does he need to do to remedy this situation? Drain everything out, clean the lines, carbs, exhaust valves, or will there be serious damage for this honest (stupid) mistake?

well at least we have a reason now.

I would drain all the gas (diesel whatever) from everything, carbs included and see how it responds after putting fuel it was supposed to run in it. Cleaning the VES would be a good idea as well. But tell him to run better oil, and not yamalube in any case. I have been using amsoil with no issues for years on my 600 VES.

As far as damage caused by having some diesel in it, I have no clue. hope for the best and see what it does after he drains the fuel puts fresh GASOLINE in it and cleans up the valves..
 
I don't think it would have hurt a thing,diesel has some lubricating
properties to it,worse case you trashed some plugs and have extra carbon
from the ash in the oil,drain put in some fresh gas and run her...
