jackshaft bearing

UB205.

Same diameter (1") as a 6205 but it locks to the shaft with a set screw.

The last time I needed to remove the driveshaft I had to break off the 3 rivets that hold the bearing retainer on the tunnel...easiest way to deal with getting that bugger off!

Good Luck!

not to hijack the thread, but I as wondering about when replace my jackshaft and front axle shaft (drive shaft w/cogs) bearings this summer, I have the front shaft out to do a suspension and track swap so I figured this would be as good of a time as any to change em... what do you guys think? Sled is an 02 SXViper with 5300 miles on stock drivetrain. I am accustom to working on older equipment where I would definitely be changing all bearings just from age but wasnt sure about this sled. Any help is appreciated.

(and sorry if this question shouldnt be in this thread, I am a newbie to this style forum and dont like starting new threads only to be ignored, thus taking up space where an intelligent question could be inserted)

I recently did research to try and find a non-OEM bearing. I went to Motion Industries (they have multiple locations) and they informed me that they could get the original bearing (NSK #UB-205) but it would take 3-4 wks to come across the pond, they could get an AMI (part# B-5) in a couple days, cost was about half at $16. I had already ordered one from Port Yamaha who had one in stock, took 3 days to get it.

Good luck.

I did mine last fall. The thing to watch for is the chaincase side has a flat outer race and the clutch side has a domed outer race.
Goodluck

Since you have the whole thing apart, I'd definitely change them. Yammie bearings are pretty good, but 5000 is a decent run. Polaris bearings you're lucky to get 3000 miles out of.

I change every bearing, every year wether it needs them or not!

At that mileage, I would change those bearings. The bearing on the drive axle, the side where the speedo cable connects, can be taken out without removing the axle. This bearing takes the most abuse since it is a "sealed" bearing but gets continually blasted with snow, ice and water. I take this bearing out every other ride ( about every 1000 mi.), pop the seal out using a dental pick, clean it and repack it with a good quality grease. All of the bearings on the sled are overkill for the loads they are carrying, they die from moisture and crud getting mixed with the grease. Probably the worst thing for the bearing life is the storage at the end of the season. During that time all the accumulated moisture starts to rust the races then the next time you load them they fail. I had the drive axle bearing fail on a long saddlebag trip in Quebec. It failed 700 miles from the truck. When it failed, it took out the axle, retainer and speedo link. It was an expensive repair which could have been avoided by changing the bearing earlier. It had 8000 miles on it.
I take the jackshaft bearing out every season to check it, clean the old grease and crud out and repack it. This has worked fine. I replace this bearing if I feel any binding as I rotate it.

Yikes... sounds like its time to visit my dealer again. I'd like to stay on top of the maintenance on this sled and not be like some of my friends who just ride and go by the 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' philosophy. I greatly appreciate the info, especially when I am out riding in the middle of no-where next season in sub zero temps, hehehe

Bearings

I could find better things to do then change them every year..instead mod it and add grease certs as I did.. Now I will only have to grease them many times a year!!
