I am looking at an 04 SX Viper Mountain. The guy says that it starts and idles fine, but will not rev over 4k rpm. He says that it starts cutting out and backfiring. I have done some research and have concluded it could be a few things:

1. What are the symptoms of the TORS problem? Is this a symptom?
2. It looks like the wiring harness needs to be checked, especially under the engine.
3. Do these symptoms point to the sled being in "safe mode", thus being unable to rev? If so, what causes the sled to go into safe mode?

The sled has 6k miles on it and the owner says that it has had top end and clutch work done. Do these sleds last many miles, or will I need to do other things to it?

Final question, is this known for a decent sled, or does it have many problems associated with it?

Great site, this is my first post. My wife rides a Cat and I have been riding a Ski Doo this year, but I am thinking of going Yamaha.

thanks

The first thing to look over would be the carbs, just clean them and look them over making sure they are set properly. Maybe the clutches could use a rebuild or new parts as well. If the price is right, go for it, they are good sleds. IF it doesn't work out then part it out and get your money back that way. XC

Oh ya, :wel: to a great site!

Oh yeah, forgot about carbs. Could it be a clogged primary keeping it from revving?

Thanks

clean the carbs , if they have never been cleaned, clean them (pilots, main jet, carb bowl) and make sure the jets are set right

oh yeah yamahas rule i wouldnt think that long and hard about buying a yamaha  just buy one that way you wont lose time riding :winterrul

Sounds like a TORS problem to me. Either the throttle cable is too tight or one osf the switches went bad. Unplug the wires and loop them together on the harness side. Probably take care of the problem. If not then I'd start checking for rub throughs, but this sounds like a classic case of TORS.

Ok, I got the Viper!!! The middle spark plug wire was a little worn through and the guy had another coil pack so I replaced it. The kill switch button was broken off and he had a new switch block, so I replaced it as well. Which wires on the carb is the TORS? There is a harness of three wires and two single wires. What do you mean unplug and loop together on the harness side? I removed the carb, main and piot jets and cleaned. They looked to be clean, but I cleaned anyway.

What else do I need to know about this sled?

Thanks
