Just wondering what the symtoms are of a bad CDI. My 2000 SRX has no fire at all. It started and then died immediatley. Now I have no fire. How do you check a CDI? Man this sucks. Just unloaded after a 5 hour drive for a weekend of great sledding and now this. Could it be anything else? I have a teste meter, just not sure what to test.

JAY, IT COULD BE CDI ( just a guess). BUT IT ALSO CAN BE TORS OR HARNESS RUB THROUGH. 3:16 (yammie tony)
It could be the stator as well.
Well, worked on it all night. Traced all the wires and I have power coming from my stator, around 12 volts when I crank it over, and have power going to my relays and CDI as far as I can tell. After messing with things, I tried it and I had fire. Started the sled and it ran fine. Let it sit for 5 10 minutes and tried again, worked great. Left if over night in a heated garage, got up this am ready for a ride and now the same thing. No fire on any plug. I have no idea what it could be. CDI maybe? Are CDI problems intermittent like this?
I picked up another CDI and that was not the problem. Maybe it is my stator. Could I show voltage coming from my stator but its too weak create spark? Its funny to that it comes and goes just like that. Could a short cause this. I did not have any other electrical problems until this.

Have you already checked the wiring harness for any spots that might be rubbed through? It would probably have the same symptoms you are describing.

My SRX had the rub through problem under the motor last year and this year the wires leading to the CDI box rubbed through about 3"-4" below the CDI box. Both times it acted up either when the motor was warmed up or when the wiring got wet. Problem would go away after wiring dried out.
My wiring harness was redone last year so I don't think that would be the problem. When pulling the sled over should I read voltage at the hand warmers and headlight or does the sled actually have to start. I don't have any voltage at either device. I have power going to both relays and to what I think is the regulator or rectifier
(just above the CDI). I have power in and out of my ignition. No power going to my coils though.

My wife's sled did the same thing. I ended up swaping the stator and I did new coils and caps at the same time. Appears to have fixed the problem.

Do you have the service manual for this? If not let me know. I will give you a link to download it off of my webspace.

Actually I don't have a manual but would appreciate the manual. I'm away on a sledding trip and so far have spent the first day in the hotel. I would love to figure this out. I was going to pull the harness out from under the motor but I don't think there are any wires under there that could cause no fire. I had no problems with my lights gauges etc. I wiring scehmatic from the manual would really help.

In my case I replaced the stator and It fixed the problem. It wasnt the actual stator though it was the pick up coil. It had seperated a bit where the wires go into box itself. All I need is a new pick up coil which I heard that you can buy seperate now and Ill have a great backup stator. The pick up coil is what reads the flywheel as it rotates. I also tried a cdi first so now I have a good spare as well but you can never have to much of yamaha parts! lol If I had to bet money Id be getting a stator or at least pick up coil if you can. good luck. you can always sell the stator if its not the problem
Well, I checked the voltage output from the pickup coil as I pulled the sled over. It basically showed zero. Moved the needle but barely. It might have read 1 volt. I am assuming that it should read more than this. These wires go directly to the CDI and from there to the coils for the plugs. Does anyone know what the pick-up coil should read for voltage?

Anyone?
I am having a similar problem , i read/ searched a lot of threads and i am able to ride my 99 srx 700 for about 45 min to a hour and then the head light dims and the it quits! Will not restart have to have it picked up with a truck and trailer. Bring it back home and it has weak spark, let it sit and the spark magical comes back! Seems to only do it when it is hot...??? I was thinking wire rub threw ??? i read a lot of post about the harness under the motor?? can some one give me a little bit better idea of what i am looking for??
i would appreciate any help

Check the harness and the stator. My 97 redhead would do the same thing. Stator was my issue.
