Im a little gun shy when it comes to arctic cats but you can pick up a decent ZR 900 in that price range.I hear they have been pretty reliable too.

After demo'ing an 09 Nytro XTX over a month ago, I would buy one of those ina heartbeat.
I really liked the nytro RTX as well, but the extra track length of the XTX will make it a sled that can do just about everything.
what is the top end (dreamometer) of this years nytros? we were not able to push past 90 mph on our demo ride, but it seemed like it had a lot left, and 0-90 was pretty darn impressive. The sounds was pretty sweet even stock, but a nice aftermarket pipe would help even more.

I am more than gun shy with cats, I pretty much steer clear of them. I had a cat as my first sled. Too many issues on friends cats for me to even think about them. although if they made the twin spar chassis hoods and mainly headlights look better, the new 1100 4 stroke (turbo or non) might be a viable option. but with the hood and lights now, I can't even look at them. I thought the Fusion was fairly ugly, but cat played copy cat and took it to a level even more disgusting.

Not too many Cat dealers around and after having a few friends back in the late 90's have ZR600s that constantly broke down I wouldn't know what to look at or for. Is a 600 edge going to keep up with our sxr700? I won't buy a poo 800 too many issues with cranks.
that 600 VES mill is VERY fast.
Mine in my Gen 2 chassis (2000) walks by every 700 twin I have ever "raced" on the lakes.
granted the Gen2 is noted for being a faster chassis than the Edge (aerodynamics) but most guys cannot believe my lil 600 is almost stock. In 4k, it has been pull and go, with only VES cleanings needing to be done every fall before the season and normal maintenace. that and the shocks had to be rebuilt, but that along with belts (which I have only ever gone through 1 - my fault-) I think it has only the second set of spark plugs in it.
A nice edge 600 will do quite well for you, and actually fit in the budget, they ride nice as well, as pretty much every polaris has.
If you want more power, you can build them to a reliable 140hp pretty easy.

I have been hearing good things about the 600 ves. I know the edge has a nice ride! The only thing I wouldn't do to a sled is pipes due to wisconsin laws and I have managed to get stopped a few times for this, luckily I have been stock.

Heres my own comparo from sleds that I own(ed) or ride.
My Viper, main reason I liked it so much was cause of it looks. The ExpertX skid diff made into a great bump sled, but the lack of HP compared to my 01 SRX made me look else where. So I parted the Viper to buy a Ported/136" ExpertX SRX which I cant use in the comparo since I just bought it and havent had it on the trails yet. But my g/f has a 01 SXR700 with Hauck triples and for corner to corner riding sure feels alot more stable and lighter(which it is) than my Viper did and runs pretty well againest my SRX. So my vote goes to another SRX or SXR with some pipes or single pipe engine mods. I know theres a few nice SXR floating around here, plus with the SXR you have no PV's to worry about and there bulletproof motors. G/F's SXR has well over 6000 miles on the original topend and has been piped from day one.

sickric said:I agree with Bluemonster, prices of new sleds are to high, younger guys can't afford to buy new sleds.
I am in my early 40's and I don't want to drop that kind of cash.
I bought 2 new vipers from the dealer in 2002 for $6400.00 each. Sled are double that now.
Prices doubled in less than 6 years !!!
Whats up with that ?
I couldnt agree more. I think too much is being created now that is actually hurting the snowmobile industry. Most new "toys" like sleds have always gone to younger guys.. seems the industry pretty much left us all in the dust.. Plus with the economy being the way it is and gas prices, shoot if i was a powersports manufacturer I would be alot more apt to not lose sales by prices. I mean would it really hurt to still be able to go to a dealer and buy a new viper and buy it for around 6k? To me sleds like the viper could have easily and cheapy been improved and still available brand new in the line ups, and not ditched for 10k caddys.

I sold my wifes Edge X 700 last fall with low miles and factory M-10 for $2300 and now thats its spring you should be able to find a steal of a deal. I put Long Travel on my SRX also, and I think Proaction Suspension Sucks compared to Edge, Doo and Cat. I have and have had plenty of Yamahas and love the engines but hate the skids.

what year edge 700 was that?
I know this is a yami site, but it is hard to fault these XC sleds.

She had a 02 Edge X 700 with factory M-10 and I had a 02 ProX 440 L/C now she has a 00 SXR 600 stock except for a 1 1/4 ripsaw because she likes Yamahas shade of blue better than Polaris. I now ride a 98 SRX 600 that I put a ripsaw and long travel on the rear and ohlins and drop brackets on the front. This summer I'm pulling out the long travel and putting in ProX or Edge Suspension in my SRX.

I would go for like a 2004 REV 600 SDI. Those run great, ride great, and are great on fuel and oil, and you can get them cheap. On a tight budget, that's what I would do. A 700 SXR also has a sweet spot in my heart, and with some shock valving they ride pretty darn nice and are also great on fuel and oil, and a bit more dependable.
