I am sure I am not the only one with this problem but the DX i just got has the end broken off the grip (shorting out the heated grips
) My XT has the end bent but not broken, my dads 94 Vmax has it broken but not shorting out the wires yet.
Now for the question, has anyone figured out a way to keep these from breaking it seems like the grip can't go on far enough or something, all 3 sleds are on the brake side. Are there good aftermarket grips that will plug into the existing wireing or what needs to be done to put a higher quality end on that side?
Also its just the one rivot that hold it on so i can drill that out and slide it right off right.

The handle bars are not very long so they dont go to the end of the grips. I ended up getting bar hooks put on. The hooks are long enough that they go into the metal handle bar ends and help stabilize the end of the grips. Haven't broken one yet.
And yes just drill the rivet out and pull off the grips.

On my sled the grip broke on the brake side also. I didnt want to spend the money for new heated grips so I striped some of the rubber on the remaining grip to get to the heat wire and just twisted them back together. Wraped them back around the grip. Put a handle bar hook on and wraped with electrical tape. Worked fine ever sice, about 3 seasons with no problems. Just that the left side is a little warmer now because there is less resistance in that grip due to the shortened wire. But work good.
i always removed the rubber spacer between the grip and the brake perch. slide grip all the wat to end of bar, reglue, redrill and rivet. grips are glued on so normally they wont just pull right off by removing existing rivet.

the last 5/8" (or so) of the grips have a smaller I.D. which makes it impossible to bottom the grips on the bars... This unsupported 5/8" becomes soft and flexible on warm days with grips on high... To keep from replacing hot grips frequently, I had pieces of hardwood lathed to fit inside the ends of the handles bars about 1.5", and extend the aforementioned 5/8" that is typically unsupported... the outer 5/8" needs an O.D. machined just slightly smaller than the bars...
These inserts were then glued into the bars and grips were slid over.... This provided support throughout the entire length of the grips... rivit stayed in same spot...
Haven 't had to replace a set since...
This applies to older sleds like the XT's/VMamax's etc.. can't speak for the vipers or newer sleds.. was on a 99 Vmax 500 C

Good idea i will have to look into that.
get some maxi grips... I believe pioneer sells them. they just plug right into the end of the grip... the"re made of andodized aluminum and work great, look sharp too, I put a set of them on my sx and never broke another grip since!
