I picked up a used 02 Viper last week and it came with both the original and an aftermarket silencer. The owner didn't know the make of the aftermarket silencer, nor are there any markings on it. I cleaned the carbs before I ran the sled - jets are all stock. The sled ran great, but after checking it out carefully, I ran a few 1000 foot WOT runs the lake and then checked the plugs. They seemed to be quite lean considering the temperature was right around freezing. I'm curious if this silencer should be run with larger main jets, and what if any horsepower increase it provides.
Can anyone identify the manufacturer from the pics below? It's really well made - nice welds and nickel plated. Thanks!

Looks like my sno-stuff can, just not used! lol
yeah im pretty darn sure its a sno-stuff
good can, don't need to do any thing to jets, i think it added about 1-2 horsepower and its not VERY loud when trail riding, but when u hit the gas, people know your coming! thats for darn sure!

That can does have some nice welds compared to what Ive seen on MBRP and Bender products. I have a Bender 4x4 and MBRP can and the welds on those 2 products have some of the worse welds Ive ever seen on a production product.

Yes it does, and not only are the welds good, so are the plating and installation fittings. I was very impressed when I first saw the can. And I am even more impressed after finding out who made it (thanks Carioca Jr), and then searching the net for further info. It generally sells for under $200 - notably less than some of the competition, yet apparently is higher quality.
Sno-stuff claims 3-5 hp increase, but everything I've read on TY suggests that no can (without pipes) will improve Viper performance (although most were referring to Bender and MBRP). I'm not so sure - it seems stronger on the lower end with the can, but we'll have to wait till next winter to find out for sure - although believe it or not it, it's April 4th and there is wet snow falling here in Eastern Ontario. Maybe one more ride before we tuck the sleds away!

Yea if youve been around sledding for a while youd except Bender or MBRP to have better made products than Sno Stuff. Sno Stuff I for one would automatically think it would be garbage but from the looks of that I would suggest there can if the person was looking for the sound and weight loss but not HP.
Hows that can sound BTW?

It sounds great. At low to mid throttle it's nice crisp note - not much louder (if any) than stock. At WOT, it's louder than stock, but not as loud or annoying as many other cans or aftermarket pipes. I haven't had a chance to put much time on it, and most of what riding I did was on a frozen lake where the sound tends to be louder as it reflects off the ice. I think in looser snow the sound would be very reasonable.

Not sure who snostuff is, but here's their website: http://www.sno-stuff.com/frame2.html . Their cans are branded as "rumble packs". They probably do import some of their products (and so do many others), but they indicate on their site that the cans are designed with "extensive dyno testing". They also indicate the hp increase for each product, so if they really don't make any hp gains, they're sure taking a hell of a chance for a lawsuit. I suspect they do make a hp increase - the question is at what rpm, and is it consistent across the rpm range.

Several guys on the site have dynoed with aftermarket cans and really, none of them make any power. The stock exhaust system on the viper underwent a great amount of testing by yamaha and without changing to triple pipes, there is really nothing left on the table as far as exhaust mods go. The aftermarket silencers do sound better and are lighter though. Do a back to back run with your stock silencer and then the aftermarket. If the rpms don't go up with the aftermarket you're not making more power. Chances are they may actually go down.

Back in the 80's i put a snostuff windsheild on that old stx you towed of Skootamata lake with your exciter.Cans are illegal on Ontario trails /.profstrong said:Not sure who snostuff is, but here's their website: http://www.sno-stuff.com/frame2.html . I had forgotten about that old STX, Kev. That was many moons ago!
And yes, I know cans are illegal on the trails. Even though this one is quieter than most cans I've heard (and also way quieter than many of the older stock triple piped Cats), I don't really have any intention of using it - except maybe on a lake for bragging rights if it did really help performance. We have already experienced enough closed trails thanks to aftermarket cans and pipes - not to mention people riding off the trails. One section of the Tweed/Stoco trails was closed early this season for that very reason...

Ya but if it's not too loud and has better #'s down low(which i think some cans do) leave it on.2 ways to improve acc. more hp or lighter weight.Sounds like i better be on my game by the time the snow flies next year or i might be getting spanked....( i have some things in mind for the srx) She's put away for now......profstrong said:I had forgotten about that old STX, Kev.
