new 1991 VMax 540 for me

I just picked up myself a 1991 Vmax 540. I've wanted one for 20 years, and finally decided to pick one up. It's rough, and is going to be a major project, but a fun one. I am not going to leave the chassis stock, but it will remain stock appearing. I am certainly going to get rid of those clutches and probably end up changing out the driveshaft, jackshaft and chaincase. The airbox is coming off, and I'll run filters on a set of flatslides. I am also toying with the idea of throwing in a well ported 780 SRX tripple, but I think pipes would be a nightmare, if it is even possible. I'll decide on the motor after I tear the entire chassis down to the ground, and sit in a tripple to see how it fits. The idea of a 180 hp tripple in that chassis just excites me. :) I'll get some pictures of weapon in the next day or so.
 
Well, here it is. Nothing fits together well.

There is a crack in the hood about 3" long on the left side, and it is damaged near the rear left latch.
The windshield is cracked around nearly every screw.
The radiator is in rough looking condition.
The seat needs to be completely re-upholstered.
The plastics around the tank are faded.
The left side panel is dented.
The right side panel does not sit flush with the hood.
The bellypan is all bent out of shape.
The front side panels on each side (in front of the shocks) don't sit flush with the hood when it is closed.
The flap, and rear bumper cover is faded and damaged.
The primary clutch has a 3" long crack in the moveable sheave, the rollers do not move freely, nor do the weights, and one of the rollers is cracked, so there is only 2/3 of it remaining. There are also gouges in the sheaves.
The fuel lines are cracked and broken.
The fuel shutoffs are not working.
The oil tank is missing because it was run premixed.
The lower handlebar pad is missing.
I haven't taken a good look at the rear suspension, but the rails look good.

Other than that, she's a beauty. :)

I don't know when I'll get started on it's revival, but I will post it in the build section when I do.

Oh, and btw, I did some measuring for fun, and it looks like there is enough room in there to fit an SRX motor. The pipes will be damn difficult though. Jaws will have their work cutout for them if I decide to go this route.

Thanks. I will probably end up going new on most things though, since I want it to be perfect.....well.....depending on price of course.

Is that all? :rofl: I'm with you on always wanting one. They are one of the best looking sleds of all time.

Those always looked cool with a widening kit, and a SRX motor- wow!

Was that the last year in Canada?
 
1991 was the last year it was built up here in Canada. This one is serial number 88D000102, which is the 2nd off the assembly line, I think.
 
Valin you are living out my dream..I have always toyed with the idea of doing an srx motor and skid in one of those and even put a few feelers out on some that were around the shape of the one you have, I figured worst case scenario it takes up space in the shop and it isnt worth a million bucks. There is just something about them that appeals to me as well, nice find!
 
Guy, it looks like the serial numbers all start at 000100 or 000101, so that would make mine the 2nd or 3rd off the assembly line in 1991.
