LIFE MEMBER ONLY ONCE!!!
On my install today, was talking to this guy who mentioned how his brother-in law was almost killed riding his sled with a buddy one night in Lockport,Manitoba.
He said..sure they had a few drinks at Gaffers Restaurant and bar,and they got on their sleds and started to ride home. They weren't going that fast, around 80 km an hour, riding side by side along the river. Now remember this is at night now,so it is dark out.
Then from around a corner suddenly a light appears,so they think fast and started to spread apart thinking that the sledder coming up quick on them would go between them.BOY WERE THEY WRONG.
What happened next was unthinkable. The light that was coming towards them was not a sled.Let me repeat...it WAS NOT a SLED.What was it?They sure found out in a hurry and almost paid with their lives.Remember it was dark,so to their surprise this light was coming from a car running down the river with 1 headlight only.Of course the guy in the car panicked seeing the 2 lights ahead of him and started braking..thus taking their car into a sideways slide.Sideways right into the 2 sledders.
The sled to the right just clipped the back end of the car, while the other fellow slammed headon into the right side door.It was an instant stop for him.He was of course knocked unconscious. He had major damage to his body, the most serious was to his leg..an artery was severed and his leg was mangled. And other injuries also with broken bones. He lost nearly 2.5 pints of blood before he could be taken to the hosiptal.Basically it was going right into a brick wall.He has also had pins put into his leg after surgery. It is lucky for him that he survived this.
Could you imagine the mess. But you would not have time to react to this and it happened really quick. He is a survivalist and continues working and life goes on.If he was lets say going 100 mph, they would be picking him up with a spatula. This is a true story that happened a few years back.
Goes to show ya that you have to be prepared for the unforseen.Because they had a few drinks in them helped and didn't help.Didn't help the reaction time, but helped because his body was in a more relaxed state and not all in a tensed tightened up position.
The guy driving the car should of been shot for what he did and caused to happen.Don't know what charges were laid or what.

Yep, that was very lucky and unlucky depending how youlook at it. You NEVER know what to expect and unfortunately there are too many out there that never expect the unexpcted. Not to say these guys could have done anything.
Side note - Comming homre from work Friday night. Driving down a 3 lane ONEWAY highway and yep, here come two headlights right at me. See some old dude driving by me as I'm brighting him and layin on the horn. I think he figured it out, cus he shot over the median on to the right side. That could have gotton real ugly.

where do all these weirdo's come from anyways.I bet a lot of these episodes have something to do with consumption of alcohol or under the influence of something.Any head on collision will certainly be a ugly mess to clean up..that's for sure.I have had a few close calls this past winter to.Riding my SRX down the river which has many winding turns.I stick to my right all the way along the river bank, yet 2 other sleds are coming around the same corner from the other way. They are also sticking to their left along the river bank and bingo..a recipe for disaster.Hard to say who is right or wrong. At speeds of at least 100mph average,it is a split decision which way to maneuver to avoid a head on.
I remember years ago I went for a quite ride one Sunday morning along the Floodway system, got up off the river and into an open area.Stopped to look around and saw nothing anywhere.Decided to turn around and go back down the river.Did a 360 turn and from out of no where comes this other sled.It was amazing. My left ski just clipped the flap on his sled.We both stopped and looked at each other in amazement. He didn't see me,I didn't see him..in a wide open field yet.1 second earlier and I would have nailed his leg with my sled. This woke me up quick like.Like WTF!!!It is like you hear on the news sometimes like 2 planes hit each other in the sky..such a wide open space yet and they hit.

A few years ago about eight guys from the Steinbach area went out for a ride. After a while in the trails over a field they noticed that a couple guys were missing from the group . They spun around to go find them . They came around a corner which had a large dip in it and WHAM there was a head on.The two guys involved were killed instantly.

A newbie RCMP chased a sledder down a marked trail in our town. Would have loved to be there when she had to tell her boss to send out a tow truck.
