Ceramic Coating flanges.

Well, i'm in the process of deciding if i want to get my pipes and can coated, was wondering if i should take off each flange on each cyl to get coated too, or should i just leave it? no extra hassle, i thought i remember being told that those shouldnt be coated...

Only reason I can think of not to do it is fit. Sometimes tight tolerance part can not be reassembled if the coating is too thick. For example the cylinder studs may not fit through the flange holes if the coating is too thick, but you could always clean the coating out by running the proper size drill bit through em.

I say coat them!
 
I am in the process of coating the exhaust flanges for both of my SRX sleds. When you have them coated, just be sure to have the surface which contacts the gasket masked to prevent the coating from being applied to that surface. There is no reason i can think of to not coat them or the pipes.
 
Any noticable power increase with the coating? i am aware that it insulates, and keeps heat in the pipes which is what they love, i found a place near me that will do, the can, and the pipes for 200 U.S. dollars
 
Gasket

I just had the pipes and flanges done... They did coat the side where it meets the gasket. Is this a problem? also bought new gaskets, one side is black the other metal finish.... Which side is which? Thanks.
 
black goes on motor side, You are supposed to specify where you DON"T want them to coat, other wise they'll do whatever is easiest.
 
The reason you dont want to get the side that contacts the exhaust port coated is that it may not seal as would a flat (cnc'd) surface, even tho the coating looks smooth, its the little imperfections.
 
I did specify, they still did what they wanted... no biggie, i am going to get some fine paper and rip it across a block a few times.
 
i had my big bore flanges cermachromed completely, not a problem, no leaks,no burnt gaskets. dont forget that those gaskets are flexible,they flatten out some when tightened and make up for any imperfections there might be on the flange.
 
BUT your better off without the coating on there just in case! you can be the one to let us know if they leak. but then again how will you ever know? it ain't a diesel you wont see black around the area.

they dont leak, i told you that, i didnt get my flanges coated yesterday, flanges were coated last winter, mrviper built my motor and installed the motor along with the big bore pipes, again, no leaks, no burnt gaskets, and if they did leak, YOU would know by the black crap that would be running down your cylinders and flanges, just as if your o-rings in your powervalves were bad, just like a diesel. when you have pipes coated, its like painting them as far as thickness goes, they dont put 1/8 inch of coating on them, i didnt have problems with the flange bolt holes,sealing issues, no problems at all and i know a few other guys that have done the same with no issues at all.

i wasnt refering to your post, i'm saying in general.... specify more next time, the place where i had mine done asked me specifically if i didn't want some parts coated, and they don't even do snowmobile pipes on the norm. but they did a damn good job, not saying your place didn't. i went with the black coating because the cermakrome will dull over time with the heat, i asked that question in the decision of what color to get and they were real with me, i thought they would blue, but they turn a dull chrome look, as if you had dirty heatshields, something like that...
 
i had mine done at direct coatings, all for 275.00, put 700 miles on them last winter and no color change at all so far, pic is when i got them back from coating and they still look the same. i did make a mistake when i had mine done, im sure you can see where i had them not coat the end of the pipes where they go in the flanges, i was afarid of the coating making it too tight of a fit, which it wouldnt have, but oh well, live and learn

Nice, i was just going by what they said and didn't want to take a chance with my investment... besides i planned on putting the heat shields back on over the black coating, i shined the shields up real nice so they compliment each other... i'll get pics up sometime.... paid 400.00 (two coat)
 
haha, they were coated in may, they are all done, this is a post from the dead... just gotta get out there and get a pic in good light...
