I recently purchased an SRX that is supposed to have an '01 motor in a late 90's chassis. How do I figure out what year my motor is from? An '01 motor will need different clutch set up than say a '98, correct? I am trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can about my sled. Any ideas of where to look for an id # or some other way of identifing the motor would really help me and put my mind at ease as to what I am getting into. Thanx!

The early year SRX models were not clutched right and had too tall gears IMO. They ran 8DN-00 clutch weights while the 00-02 ran 8DN-20 weights.

Just follow the 00-02 clutching and gearing specs which are 23/38 and PM me if you want to slightly modify that clutch set-up for very cheap to get you alot more out of the sled.

The heads should say 8DN I believe for 00 and newer motor. The 98-99 600 heads say 8DF

2000 and 2001 cyli9nders and head will carry a id # 8dn-10
1998 and 1999 cylinders and heads will carry a id # 8dn-00

tech pages have all the info you need for crosschecking ...

The heads and jugs say 8DN-00. So he shammed me on saying it had an '01 motor. Oh well I got it with an M-10 for $1500 so I can't bitch too hard. What are the power diffs between the 98-99's and 00's,01's,and 02's?

I think maybe just a few HP not really much. The later year cylinders are ported a little better and later year heads are 4cc's tighter.

$1500 is a good deal. Is it in good condition?? I would go through everything on the sled.

Great condition from what I can see. The suspension is immaculate. I am gonna spend a lot of time in the garage this summer making sure everything is perfect. I did notice what looks to be an oily sludge on the pto exhaust pipe right under the powervalve. So that comes out this weekend. When I run the sled a little smoke puffs out the bottem of the powervalve so I think the gasket might be shot. We'll see.

Thanks for the info guys.

gasket or oil ring seal, that is suppose to wipe the valve off and keep the oil from going into the pv housing. if you have oil leaking out the bottom drain hole, then more than likely the oil ring seal is out. if its oily all along the bottom edge of pv housing, where it contacts the cylinder, then that black gasket is out. congrats on the purchase.

hey tomseal, you forgot that the '99 srx 700's ran 8dn-10 weights, not 8dn-00. 8dn-00 were only '98 i believe.

Corey9965, can you post some pics of the latest toy?

You can do a el-cheapo lift & cut port job & get the hp close or even better

I'm all ears Turk. Anything I can do. I ride with a tripple piped Viper S, 2 Apex GT's, and an '03 Rx1. I don't wanna be playing catch up all the time. I'll feel even better if I can take them with the "old iron" once in a while. Let me know what you got for me.

Add 2 stock base gaskets(total of 3) & cut the head 25 thou. Cut it 30 thou if you allways get good premium. Good for 6-8 hp & cheap.

How can I tell if the head is already cut? It should have the base gaskets in already then, correct? The fella I purchased the sled from said the heads were shaved. But he also told me I had a newer motor than I got, so I guess I'll take a look and see for myself.

Thanx for the info.

Richford. Halfway between Wautoma and Coloma. I am about 5 minutes from I-39/51. What do the Hi- Tech secondarys run, about $350-400 I think. What about a set of Heavy Hitters?

no, the hi-tech roller bolts up to your yamaha secondary clutch. so, you are keeping the good secondary, just making it better:)

the heavy hitters, brand new will run you anywhere from $200-$280. rich motorsports i think has the best prices.

How many miles on the sled? When you pull the top end, I would mike the pistons 10 millimeters north of the piston skirt and see if they are in specs. If there is alot of blow-by (alot of brown/black coloring below the ring lands) that is a really good indication you need new rings as well.

You can easily tell if the heads were machined. IMO the factory yamaha aluminum casting looks kinda dull and you should be able to tell if they were already machined.

I forgot about the 98-99 SRX poor mans port job that Turk just gave you but it works.

2 extra base gaskets and a .030 straight cut at a machine shop is the way to go on those sleds.
