Should I leave it alone, or modify it?

Well, I was bored, so I did some measuring, and the SRX 700 engine base is just a hair wider than the Vmax540 base. The motor will fit in there with ease, however, the pipes will be a difficult fit, and the Mag carburetor is going to run right into a vertical frame support. A bit of modification will have to be done there. Other than that, It looks as though it would be a fairly easy job. I think the rad might have to go to fit the pipes.

Decisions, decisions.......

leave it alone as a 540, or go with a well ported 780, 40.5mm bored mach z carbs with filters, severely modified stock pipes, srx clutches, jackshaft, chaincase, driveshaft and a different skid?

The sled will look 100% origional when I am finished.

Leave it a 540. Just update the porting and put a set of pipes her. Wont be hard to get upper 90hp as is. Take your 17yr old sled and put a wooping on the best of todays 600's

srx motor, route one pipe the other way to fit under the hood if need be, stock srx 121" skid, nitrous, sell to me..It really is your only route, trust me on this...LOL!

6 votes in favor of the big motor eh?.......

There's just something about having 175hp in an old Vmax that gets me excited.

That sled with a 540 won't touch a newer 600 Polaris, Doo(especially TNT, 400 pounds dry), or a F6 firecat. Not even close. Wouldn't be worth it at all. These sleds are all in the 120+ h.p. range stock and more torque to boot.

yes, do it! I want to do one myself, but with a Rotax 800 over 200 ponies. Just use a long track and skid, otherwise you will flip it. I flipped my 79 srx with a vmax 600 twin in it over...hurt like a bitch for a month...lucky I got out of it without getting hurt bad.

Oh yeah, a v-max 4 will fit as well. I think there are pics on here someplace of one.

well I had TONS of great racing this winter in our '92 and older 600cc class. Just based my statment off that. Dont know much about the newer stuff. But I have heard of builders getting 110+ hp out of the 540 motor

I only said something because you said you could "Take your 17yr old sled and put a wooping on the best of todays 600's". That simply wont happen, your easily out horsepowered by 10 or more horses and alot more torque. Take the new ski-doo tnt for example, 400 pounds dry and 120+ horsepower. Maybe you can beat older 600's or run with them but the new ones over the past few years, I dont think so.

Dude! There's a guy on here someplace with a 75 GPX that makes 128HP!

Try a tad over three hundred pounds and start shredding new 6's! These 540's are capable of that kind of power, they could lose a few pounds compared to the X, but there's a few out there that you'd better not under estimate on that poo 6.

I've got plans to build an aluminum bulkhead for mine, and the thoughts of a nicely ported and piped 600 stuffed in there makes my knees go kinda weak! 130HP! Yeehaw! G.
